How Does The Screening Process Work?

Tue Jun 07, 2005 3:39 am

I'm relatively new to A.Net and have my 1st photo waiting to be screened. Out of curiosity, could anyone answer any of the following questions:

1. How many screener are there?

2. Who decides which screener screens which photo's?

3. How many screeners screen each photo?

4. Approximately how long does it take to screen each photo?

5. Are accepted pics uploaded to the site continuously or once a day?

Just curious.

I think I can answer some of these, apologies in advance where/if I am wrong.

Quoting Sean377 (Thread starter):
1. How many screener are there?

I believe it is just under 30 (27?). Some are more active than others.

3. How many screeners screen each photo?

1 or more. If a photo is clearly good enough or rare enough for the database, the first screener may add it without passing it on to any others. This is usually referred to as a 'Direct Add'.

Officially, it used to be said that 3 was the number of screeners that a photo had to pass to be accepted, although I have heard that on occasions a difficult photo may pass through several screeners before final acception or rejection.

5. Are accepted pics uploaded to the site continuously or once a day?

Continuously, or semi-continuosly. If you keep reloading the latest additions page, you will notice new pictures appear every so often, usually in little batches.

Best regards,

Jim
Erm, is this thing on?

http://www.airliners.net/about/ although that list needs to be updated, it should give you some idea.

Quoting Sean377 (Thread starter):
2. Who decides which screener screens which photo's?

Except for the appeals and "left for Johan" (which are screened by headscreeners), the process is completely arbitrary.

Quoting Sean377 (Thread starter):
4. Approximately how long does it take to screen each photo?

In Mid-december the wait can be less than 3 hours. Right now it's upwards of 2 weeks.

With over 500 photos added daily, it'd be pretty damn hard to screen them all at once  Wink

Don't be at all discouraged if it gets rejected. I myself had around 50 no-gos before my first acceptance and even then I still see rejections regularly. Even still, my 200th photo will be in the Q tonight.

If you ever wonder how to edit your photos after you get them on your computer, follow this link for a nice guide to processing your pics.

Welcome to a.net, it's a fun place to be.

What I meant was how long (on average!) does a screener take over each photo? I realise only the screeners may be able to answer this and it will vary between screeners and photo's, but there must be an average - 10 mins? 1 hour?

I thought approved photo's may be held back until a daily upload time. But you've answer another question I had - over 500 photo's added daily.

Appeals are screened by the four Head Screeners. "Left for Johan" are screened by.... Johan!

Right now it's 8-10 days, not "upwards of 2 weeks".

The screeners are currently screening 28,000 (give or take a 100) images a week. There are a lot of screeners all around the world, so at any given time there is usually a screener working. Accepted images are added to the database within moments of the screening decision.

Officially, it used to be said that 3 was the number of screeners that a photo had to pass to be accepted,

Exceptionally good photos may get "Instant Added" by the first or second screener, but normally an image must be considered acceptable my THREE screeners before it can be added. It may be possible that four, five, six or lots more screeners also pass judgement on the image while it's in the queue. This may be because of marginal quality or perhaps unfamiliarity with the subject/location, etc.

4. Approximately how long does it take to screen each photo?

A screener will examine a shot for anywhere between 20 seconds and a couple of minutes while screening, and it will usually be examined by three or more screeners (you do the math, that's a lot of screening time!). Images wait in the queue in a strict upload-order basis until they are screened.

Thanks Tamsin.

And the burning question on everyone's lips...

How does one become a screener?

By applying when they announce they need screeners. Having lots of quality pics and a low rejection rate also helps.

We are always on the look-out for new screeners, and in future the process will probably be an invite-only affair. Historically that's how we operated. We obviously see everybody's images and have a feeling for people's rejection ratio and capabilities. Equally important though is an individual's adaptability - somebody who shoots nothing but approach shots at the same airport will not demonstrate that they know how to screen museum shots, night shots, air-to-air, etc.

A tall order indeed: Not many rejects, highly proficient in post-processing, a wide-range of subject and conditions, a team-player, friendly and enthusiastic, with broadband internet access, plenty of free time, preferably abilities with film/scanning, etc.

Such people do exist, and while you all go out shooting and upload, we're watching and waiting for the next suitable candidates...  Smile
