SFO On Sunday 6/12

Tue Jun 07, 2005 5:26 am

I will be at SFO on Sunday 6/12 and would love to meet up with one or more locals for some photography. I'll be staying at a hotel downtown, and I won't have to be at the airport until 9:00pm on Sunday. I won't have a car either. Even if you can't meet up, I'd appreciate some suggestions as to how/where I can go for some photography. Thanks in advance!

I'd be more than willing to make it out there to show you around. Now I don't have a car and I'm sure more photographers in the area could be of more help but if you want to meet up feel free to drop me a note via. my profile.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt -

Well, since you're the first to respond, perhaps you can shed some light on a few things for me.

First, do I even need a car to go spotting around SFO? I really want to go to the park that everyone seems to go to for pictures.

Second, I seem to remember there being a website that was put together by some of the local SFO spotters, and it had a link to a tide chart. I can't find that website anymore, but maybe you know of it?

Third, I'll be staying near Embarcadero on Saturday night, so what would I need to do to get out to SFO for some spotting, assuming I don't have a car and that no one can give me a ride?

Fourth, what's the optimal time of day to go spotting?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Josh

P.S. - I forgot to mention...I'd love to get together, with just you or with you and a group of other locals, so I'll send you an e-mail with my cell phone number. Hopefully on Saturday when I arrive we could talk for a moment to set up something for Sunday.

Hi Josh,

You don't really need a car to go to the park (Bayfront Park). The basic step is to first take BART from any station along Market St (Embarcadero, Montgomery, or Powell) for SFO. Then get off at the international terminal and take the Marriott / Westin hotel shuttle bus (I believe these 2 hotels share the same shuttle bus). Then you can get off at either Marriott or Westin and walk to the park.

And the website you're referring to is this one:

http://flygga.tripod.com

Also spotting time from Bayfront Park is pretty much all day. However being this time of the year, heat haze will be a major problem.

Hope that helps.

You can also just get off at the Millbrae exit and walk about 1/4 mile. The other thing is that there is now a fence up on the airport side of things that prevents shots from the park. You must go up a few levels in the Westin and shoot from above.

No need for a car. You can milk the hotel shuttles which I love doing. There are also very many spots around the actual airport. What lenses do you have?

I have never seen such a site. If someone around here knows of the site please advise I would like to see it!

If you are near the Embarcadero then you can just take BART. What time are you going to be arriving? If it's later than 6 there is no way in hell you'll be able to get down there and actually spend time there.

Quoting Jakbar (Reply 2):

I normally show up around 12-1 and will stay until 5:30-7ish. By that time all the European departures are out and all the Asian departures are out.

Hope that helps ya!

I arrive at SFO around 2:30pm on Saturday, and am planning to go straight to the hotel via BART and then head over to the Fishermans' Wharf area. I've never been to San Fran, so I wanna play tourist for a few hours. My plan for Sunday is to take BART up to the airport after breakfast and arrive around noon. My only goal for the day is to get some sort of parallel approach shot.  Smile

I have a 12-24, a 24-85 and an 80-400VR. It sounds like the first two lenses aren't gonna get used on Sunday.

I don't have to be at the airport until 9, so I'll stay out until sunset, and then maybe grab a bite to eat at one of the area hotels before heading over to the airport. I'm not flying out, but just picking up a colleague before we drive up to Marin County (where we have business meetings on Monday).

Is the Westin in the park? And where exactly at the hotel do you have to go to shoot from? I've not heard of these fences, so they must be something new...but that sucks.

Best time of day would actually be the MORNING. Heat haze is KILLER now (I spot SFO often, and live close by...also just now got back from a spotting trip there, SJC, MRY, LAX, and more.

Evening can be nice in SFO, but wind is a major issue as day progresses. Another GREAT spot is Coyote Pt., but requires a car to get to.

Enjoy your trip, and if you need more help, drop me an e-mail!

No, but very close.

Note you can still get arrivals to the 28s the normal way, but must use the Westin for the taxi shots.

Hi,
I will be in SFO for my summer trip 15-22 June.

I would also like to hit SFO for some spotting, morning will probably be good for me, because of jet lag, and me waking up at a crazy hour in the morning because it feels like mid day!

I have a 75-300 Lense on my 300D, and would love to get some photos. Would the spots mentioned above be okay with that lense?

I am stopping in the downtown Ramada Hotel - are the spots easy to get to from there?

If anyone wants to meet up, drop me a email.

Adam

P.S. I am arrving on KLM on the 15th, so if anyone wants to shoot my arrival on the T7... Smile

Where exactly do you shoot from at the Westin? Is it somewhere where non-guests can go?

So if you can't shoot the 01R taxiing action from Bayfront Park, will the arrivals on the 28s keep me occupied if I am at Bayfront Park?

The 28's are quite a ways out, and heat haze is hard to get around there. Again, morning is your best bet, and you need to keep that big 400mm lens of yours on there.

What do you recommend for the afternoon?

BTW, am I correct in assuming that this type of shot is from the park:

Are there any good spots at the airport (i.e., parking garages) that would be worth checking out?

Josh,
as you know i've just been to SFO, i must say your going to have a hard time after 1030-11am right through the day til the evening, the heat haze is terrible to say the least! which is why you see very few shots in the database from SFO currently, especially of 28 approaches.

that photo you linked is from bayshore park, taxi shots from the westin hotel, means you have to go into the hotel and up into the fire escape stairs, i never did so i can't comment.

the approach shots which are standard sideon's, best spot is the fishermans point, it's quite a way from bayshore and you need a car, but i got alot more shots from there than i did at bayshore, cos the heat haze was a killer! fishing point is good after 11am to the evening, if you want those shots from bayshore then go there late in the day or early in the morning! and i mean very early!
to get to fishermans point, continue along the road that bayshore is on, heading away from the airport til you get to the very end and you will see a small car park on the left, usually filled with cars and fisherman! thats the spot.

i recommend Nicks at Fishermans Wharf for a great chowder and beer and fish n chips also!  Smile

hope that helps

mont

Best time for SFO 28s is Dec-Jan.

For June, you best bet (if you are after perfect sun angles) is 7am spotting at Bayfront park for departures (especially 01 R). Rwy 28s are really not good until late evening for some decent shots.

Such shots are no longer possible due to the added fence. Not just poles but full fence.

Bummer to hear...

Keep those you love close,

How about if you shoot from the Westin?

Here's my plan for Sunday: I'm actually gonna stay at the Westin right there next to the park instead of staying downtown, so I'll be available all day long. I'm certainly more than happy to meet up with anyone who wants to shoot action on the 28s from the park, or I'd be happy to head over to the airport via the airport shuttle if there are good spots there. Or...if someone has a car and wants to go shoot at Coyote Point, I'd be happy to accept a ride.  Smile I think that I would like to get up early on Sunday morning to shoot action on the 28s, and then during the day when the heat haze apparently gets bad, I'd be open to trying any other locations. It sounds like you are able to continue shooting action on the 28s in the early evening, so if that's the case I'd like to head back there for a little while.

E-mail me at josh_akbar@hotmail.com if you'd like to get together on Sunday. The weather is supposed to be great.

Josh
avoid coyote pt is my advise mate! it's actually to close to the inbound approach traffic on 28L and gives you a pretty awkward angle, i didn't like shooting from that spot, better off at fishing point which provides a good clean sideon shot! to get there go to the end of the road that bayshore is on, take a sharp left where the gas station is on the corner and drive til you pass the doubletree hotel and you will eventually come to a carpark with an open gate across it. thats fishermans point!

the westin is good as mentioned for the 01 stuff, useless after 10am, heat haze will rape you of any good shots! so when the haze sets in head up to fishermans pt, it's a few miles before coyote point and you can actually see coyote pt from fishermans pt!

the westin is right across the road from bayshore so no worries there, you can spit on the park its that close  Wink

hope that helps

Josh,

On a good day, it's a 15-20 minute walk from the Westin to the fisherman's point (actually is a small park just before coyote point). Walk along the bay, there's a great walk path at the shoreline (access to all), passing the Embassy Hotel all the way to the Sheraton, after that, there's a restaurant (I believe it's Kincaid), and you're next to the point.

Along the path, you will have great shots of the bay approach with your 400mm. I particularly enjoy watching the dual approaches from the Embassy Hotel court yard facing the bay.

Happy spotting.

As nice as the fisherman's point is last time I was there 1) the fishermen were a bit pissy with their poles and the chances of getting hooked are high, 2) there are loads of rats running around 3) dead fish parts and 4) after 6 you can't park there. All in all it's worth the $5 to park your car in the park.

Thanks,

Matt

no trouble with Yum in SFO, but i can point you to the area where you might find his brother  Wink

as for the fisherman, they are perfectly fine, i sat around talking and having a few beers with them and talking about Australia, there was no problems with fishing poles or anything of that nature!

Matt,
sorry to say but the fishing point is far more easier than Coyote, with Josh's 80-400 lens the angle of his shots is going to be pretty awkward! you can walk along the wall at fishing point and you avoid any rubbish, as for rats, i'm sure Josh is farmiliar with them from riding the NY subways!  Wink
