Beijing And Shanghai Spotting! Any Problems?

Wed Jun 08, 2005 12:17 pm

just wondering who among us has been to Beijing recently, i am heading up there in october for a week in Beijing and the same in Shanghai, is there any issues? how easy is it to get to the spotting locations? Beijing and Shanghai, are they expensive cities or relatively cheap?

the traffic looks sensational in China to say the least, so any advice would be apperaciated!

thanks

I'm a native of Beijing. I think it should be OK for spotting in Beijing. And the expense out there won't be high, of course. You may spend no more than US$20 getting many tasty Chinese dishes in some "greasy spoons." Talking about traffic, you definitely will learn what the traffic "jam" really means in Beijing especially in rush hour. But, sorry, I don't know Shanghai much.

If you want to learn more, such as, some must-go resorts, you may contact me by my email address, bubbles_in_tp@yahoo.com.

Hope it helps!

No problem at both places. I have never been outside of the terminal area at Shanghai Pudong, so I can't give you any pointers.

Both airports have excellent non-official areas. There are lots of guard patrols but they will leave you alone. Some even looked through my binoculars.

Shanghai Hongqiao (older, domestic only airport): I have only gone during the winter and always operations were to the south. At that end, you can shoot aircraft on arrivals and departures by positioning yourself around the area. It takes about 30/40 minutes walk from the terminal.

Beijing: To the west of the CZ terminal, a road will go under the taxiways linking the east-side and west-side runways. A good place is just before the road goes under the taxiways and the other on the otherside. There's probably other places but this would require some form of transport other than by foot.
Also, if you are spending one week at Beijing, check out the Air Force Museum at Datanshang about 1 hour north of Beijing. Ask your hotel for a car hire, cost ends up being about $100 a day.

But they put a wall there...i still could go in via a small hole but think now its completely blocked...real shame had lots of fun there.

Terminal in Shanghai Pudong is real great also. Mail Andrew Hunt, he might know more about areas outside Pudong by the runways as I didn't go there didn't have time.

Goodluck

Hi Monty,

the line up spot at 36L was closed and fenced off. (like original VOR field in Sydney)

About 36R, there are too many heavy construction going on atm, last heard all the spots were gone and became inaccessible since May.

18R/36L in the afternoon remain open and good for photographing.

Is now the time to go to PEK before it became a CDG or some sort.

I will be there on 23June for only 1 day and may let you know the latest.

Quoting DRAIGONAIR (Reply 4):
Terminal in Shanghai Pudong is real great also.

Where? I found that the roof support columns and the horizontal beams going between them in the gate area got in the way.

Visit gate 16/17 at Terminal 2 of PEK. That's a great spot also.
