I Need Photo/camera Advice...

Thu Jun 09, 2005 12:54 am

These are my photos on myaviation.net...

http://www.myaviation.net/search/sea...view=&photographer=Alex%20Mcknight

The ones on the first page are the most recent ones (duh) with the best available camera I had (3 MP, 252mm telephoto lens, digital), but they didn't quite make it...

My question is, what is an affordable digital camera that can give me a.net picture quality? I'm getting a job this summer, and should have about $400-700...

Hey, First off your pics are not too bad. I would say distance is one of your biggest problems. I have had 2 great cameras for photos on A.net. My first 6 were shot with the Olympus C-765, a 4MP 10X (350mm equivalent) camera that did me well for a couple months. That cost about $300 when I bought it. Then I upgraded to the 300D with a 75-300 mm lens and I love it. The 300D body new plus lens should cost about $750 or so, but the price keeps dropping because of the 350D coming out. I only have about 30 photos on A.net, but I have been shooting seriously for only a few months. I hope this helps. You can see my pics from my photo album in my profile. Hope this helps.

Hey mate,

I would indeed go with the 300D. As Matt said due to the 350 coming out, the price should drop. I also have this camera and its just great a good value for your money!

I would go with that one if you have the money. A good start!

goodluck!

Nick

Any other recommendations? I'm not sure if even a $750 camera is feasible...  sigh

I use a 3.2 megapixel Olympus C-740. I shot most of my pics here using it and I also have some which I took with a Canon Powershot A85.

I wouldn't recommend the A85 because its image quality is quite poor -- I'm just mentioning it to illustrate that you don't have to have DSLR quality to get photos on to a.net (though it helps). The Olympus, though, should be good enough -- particularly the more recent 4mp models.

I own the Canon 300D as well, with a 300mm lens and as far as I'm concerned I'm loving it. The issue of a good DSLR camera is being talked about in two other threads right now, so if I were you I'd take a peek there too. However money seems not to be an issue in these threads. Anyways, like said before the price of the 300D keeps dropping since the 350D's release. Here in Germany you can buy it for around those $750 already mentioned. However it comes with the standard 18-55mm lens which won't do you too much good for getting good shots. That will however post a financial problem there I think since a new lens, like a 200mm or 300mm one will cost you, depending on which kind you want $300 - $infinity.
I'm not too familiar with non-DSLR cameras at this time but there are a couple that don't seem too bad, like the Konica Minolta Dimage Z series, since they have good zoom. You might also want into something like that if you want to go cheaper.
Cheers,

Sebastian

My pics on myaviation were taken with a 3.2 MP Canon A70... So I know what you mean about Canon...

That is the Olympus C-750, right?

Thanks,

What is your price range? Here are some good starts in your search:
www.dcresource.com -> this site allows you to search cameras by several features, including optical zoom length and price. Also has extensive reviews of cameras, but this one has better reviews.
The Panasonic Lumix, Olympus C, and KM Z series, along with the Fuji S5100 are some good cameras with plenty of zoom at an affordable price. They have anywhere from 7X to 12X optical zoom.
