Looking For A New Lens..28-300.. Or What?

Thu Jun 09, 2005 6:01 am

Hey everyone! I am looking for an allround lens which covers pretty much all the basic zooms..

I have a 300D and look into getting either the Sigma or Tamron 28-300mm F3,5-6,3 lens!

Are they any good?

Or would you suggest another lens? Maybe a Canon USM or IS or whatever..I really appreciate your input!!

THX and greets from GRZ,

Patrick

I would stay away from any of these so-called "hyper zooms."

28-300, 24-200 etc etc, you loose too much in quality and softness.

If cost is an issue you should start with something like a 24-85, and then a 75-300, but I would stay away from the 28-300.

Thanks Click.

Ok..75-300 is fine too! Any further hints as to which one? I am willing to spend money if the outcome is appropriate!

The 75-300mm is a fine starters lens. I love my to death and would never let it go.

Thanks,

I have a Canon 70-200 f/4L. I've had to get a 1.4 extender to get the appropriate zoom, but I love how the lens works. You can pick one up new for under $600 and it's well worth it. This lens is definitely worth the "L" title. Fred Miranda has a great review of it for you.

Thanks for your help!

I'll probably decide between the
Canon EF 75-300mm 4.0-5.6 IS USM (488,40€uros)

or the

Canon EF 70-200mm 4.0 L USM (685€uros)!

Now, considering that I would have to get a converter to cover up the higher zoom range I'll probably go with the first choice!

Or do you think the "L" really makes the difference and is worth the extra 200€ ???

P.

The L really is a huge difference. I had the same choice and i went for the 70-200 f/4. It's such a fantastic lens for the price. The quality you get out of it rivals lenses that cost upwards of $1000. Go to a camera shop and shoot both. Compare the quality, see which one you like more.  Silly

Hi!

1. The L-glass is definitely worth the extramoney! No doubt about that!

2. If money is not that much of an issue and you really desperately want some kind of megazoom, you could go for the new Canon EF 28-300 L IS f/3.5-5.6

Currently this is as good as it get's if you're looking for megazooms for Canon. However, the price is quite hefty! Here in Germany it sells for around 2.250€ right now.

Cheers,
Mike
