Microsoft Expression (aka Acrylic)

Sat Jun 11, 2005 5:10 am

Microsoft is offering a free Beta download of their new Photoshop competitor, Expression.

http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/

The program is based off a product called Creature House Expression 3, a review of that product can be found here:

http://www.creativemac.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=15353

The article concludes;

And it has all the tools and functionality you'd expect from a professional-level creative suite. I give Creature House Expression 3 a Strong Buy recommendation.

Thanks Royal, I had heard rumor of this, but had not seen much of it lately. Have you tried it?

Downloading it now. Very much doubt it can replace PS CS2... I'll bet that little paperclip shows up and want's to teach me how to save as jpg or some other elementary task.

Don't underestimate Microsoft. They're very good at taking an established platform and marketing it themselves. I'll bet if it's not good now, it will be.
It takes a big man to admit they are wrong, and I am not a big man.

I'm gonna download. If it works well for me, it will go up on my FAQ page along with my photoshop workflow.

Does this thing do .RAW?

That's true. I don't think they'll ever get the pro market though. There were Photoshop competitors like Electric Image before, and there are alternatives now like GIMP and PSP. But with PS being maybe the greatest piece of software on earth   I don't see myself ever switching. But this might make a good consumer photoeditor. I imagine it wont be expensive and will probably soon be bundled with alot of cameras. Just my guess. I only needed a few minutes to decide I didn't like the interface.

edit: DLKAPA no it didn't read my .NEF files, and I dont see any other rawformats in the list either.

Just tried it. It seems to have many features that PS has but slightly different. USM for instance is radius, amount, threshold instead of amount, radius, threshold as in PS. The sliders were better though at low numbers.

Nope.

every time I try to do something I get a thing that says "filter failed because of internal error" so so far it's done absolutely nothing.

Works pretty good for me. No errors other then the operator type. Reading the tips and file that came with it helped there. The auto contrast feature worked really well on a few images that I tried it on, as did the saturation. Might be nice to use in conjunction with CS for certain things, but you can tell it is designed more for the Graphic Artist, then for working photos.

Jeff, I did download it, seems to be more geared for Freehand users, things like Vector art, paths, that kind of thing.

I just upgraded to Photoshop CS and now CS2 comes out. Ugh, more $$$

CS2 has some brilliant new tools. I attended the free CS2 seminar in Auckland yesterday. The new vanishing point tool that can clone areas in perspective is really good. As the presenter said this version is aimed at the digital photographer and even uses photographers terms now instead of printer terms. Another feature is being able to adjust the meta data like the aperture and see the result on screen. Bridge has taken over the role of file browser and integrates all five programs that make up CS2 Premium. If you get the chance the free seminar is well worth the time and effort to attend.

For those living in Australia check out the time they will be near you over the next month.

For other parts of the world go to the Adobe web site for info.

Sorry if I got off subject but Expression doesn't have a Mac version to trial.  Smile

Cheers,
Colin

Thanks for the link Colin, here is the US link

http://adobe.regsvc.com/reg/site2/overview.asp?site=749&mc=a

I am really interested in going, but photographers is not on their list of people who should attend. Was it a really high pressure "buy our software!" type thing? I'd have to put some company name down and stuff, lol. I'll call them on monday for more info.

As for the MS Expression, I am having some of those same errors. Definetely the beta version.  Smile

It looks like you may have limited seats available and there are just two sessions. The one here was split into 4 sessions and I guess with our small population everybody could go and they even asked us to bring a friend. Overall at a guess there would have been 400 to 500 at the main sessions. They did mention a couple of times to go out and buy but not a real hard push.
Still worth a try if you can go as a photographer.
Here is the web site that lists the South East Asia seminar format.
