Canon 100-400L Is

Mon Jun 13, 2005 4:50 am

Hi there folks..

Got a bit of a problem, which im seriously pissed off about.. I bought a Canon 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 L IS off ebay in February, from a US seller.. the lens arrived in a mint condition, still sealed in the box.. I noticed it getting stiffer and stiffer as you get upto 400mm.. then today, its not moving at all, well it is.. but you seriously have to pull to get it out and its leaving deep scratch marks on the barrel itself.. The 'tightening' ring doesnt move more then about 1cm and its fully tight, i'm thinking theres something in there..

Does anyone know if Canon UK will repair it on a USA Warrenty? Ive been told by a un-confirmed source that it isnt.. has anyone else had this problem? If this isnt possible on warrenty, can it be sent back to the US for repair?

Im guessing if its not repairable on warrenty, its gonna be a few quid in repairs.. anyone paid it yet?

thanks in anticipation,

Lew

Sounds like something worked its way loose in there. One thing I made sure of since I was spending that amount of money, was to send in the warranty card that came with the lens. I bought my lens from B&H, and also bought a seperate extended warranty from them. I know its after the fact, but hopefully it will help someone in the future.

Rather than seeing if Canon UK will fix it, is there anyone here in the states you trust? Have them send it in for you with there info for warranty service. It may be a little unorthodox, but if it comes down to it, you could "sell" it to them for a few days...

Hi TFS,

I had the exact same problem that you had with my own 100-400L. It happened only about six month after I bought it and it's been on repair since this moment... 2 months ago now. And Canon Switzerland is charging me about 350£ for the repair...  grumpy  They said it's my fault if something went inside. The warranty is a NO-WAY for them....
So now I'm only hoping I'll get it before my upcoming trip to Amsterdam and Cologne...  Sad  Sad

Hope it helps...

Yeah, mine had that too, but after repairs (still inside warranty) it looks as good as new.

Funny you should mention that.. its from Vegas... looking like im going to have to send it to Canon USA or Canon Canada.. dont think canon uk will transfer the warrenty to the uk.

cheers all,
