Anybody Up 4 Spotting At SNA, SAN & Others.

Fri Jun 17, 2005 2:20 pm

Well im planning on being in L.A. for summer break between June 22-July 9th. Fellow photographer Cameron Bowerman will be joining me from the 23rd-25th for a spotting trip. The plan so far is to go to SNA on thursday afternoon. Friday morning stop at LGB for little bit then proceed south to hopefully a sunny San Diego, we would like to shoot at SAN and NAS North Island to get some S-3 action. If the weather is not that great along the coast line on friday then we will head north to MHV. Plans for saturday are to hit VNY. This is an open invitation for anybody that would like to join us. If you can't make it, any advice on where to shoot would be greatly appreciated. For you San Diego guys, have anybody taken shots from the beach next to Hotel Del Coronado to get some shots of jets arriving into North Island? Oh yea, we are going to try to squeeze in LAX also.

Cameron I just thought of MHV as a backup for friday, is that cool?

I would like to go if the weather is good. Lately the "June Gloom" has been around and not burned off at all for 4-5 days straight. It is likely to effect all the airports you mentioned except MHV. I will be around Thurs. the 23rd, and I am flying back to SNA from LAS of the 22nd. Let me know through this thread or email as the days get closer what is going on. Hope to see you around.

Good places to spot at SAN:

Quoting Shaun Edelstein, who has over 200 pics on A.net:

...the parking lot that's best for you is at the corner of Laurel and N. Harbor drive. It is very small with only 5 spaces so you'll have to watch closely where it is .... go WEST on Laurel toward the airport and as soon as Laurel merges with harbor Drv....keep close to the Right Hand Side ... and just as you merge BEFORE the coast guard station swing a hard right towards the big gates at the traffic light and then hard right again into the little parking lot...

There you'll find a GREEN Electricity Box that you can stand on to get
a better view of the arriving traffic. (Endquote)

That is, AFAIK, the only legal spotting area at SAN. Cops won't give you trouble there, I've gone there twice.
Scotty doesn't know...

If you're at SAN in the summer time, you'll probably get your best results either early in the morning (before heat haze becomes a problem but with a good chance of morning clouds) or late afternoon when the sun is low again and any clouds have had a chance to burn off. Try to nail Aloha, Independence, or Westjet as there aren't any photos of these airlines at SAN in the database yet. The website www.san.org has a flight planner which you can use to see what airlines & aircraft are scheduled.

Thanks for the info guys. Can you give any advice on NAS North Island? I checked the weather for So Cal this week and so far it looks pretty good.

Coronado Beach can get you some arrivals for NASNI. Otherwise, if you don't have a government ID card, you can't be granted on base. There is a bar near SAN which gives you a great view, so go there and grab a drink but photography is not allowed. I won't be in the LA/San Diego area anytime time soon but however, I'll be in the SJC/SFO area in late July.

Have fun

I've driven by Coronado Beach but never actually checked the area to take photos, but I plan on going back and checking it out again.

Matt, so far SNA is looking good for Thursday afternoon if your still up for meeting us.

Mike & Matt, it looks like the weather is going to be good on Thursday for SNA, what time is a good time to head to the airport for lighting? And where do you recommend to meet? This will be my first time going to SNA so I will need directions. I know how to get to the airport I just don't know where to get off.

directions to the main spotting area at SNA:

405n/s exit macarthur and go east on macarthur, then turn left(north) on main st., then turn left (west) on Redhill and go over the bridge and make your first left, i believe its airport loop ln. or some sort, follow that till it turns into a cul-de-sac and turn right into the business area, follow that all the way down till you hit the grassy knoll and park, there is a bush with a hole in it that you can get a great view allthough i dont like the spot as much, most people bring a step ladder and shoot from one of the grassy knolls, i stand in the bed of my truck and shoot over the hedge. there is a little deli thats halfway down the business area street if you get hungry, they take awhile though.

hope you have fun!

PS- if youre daring like me, usually there is one of those old struck/staircases that is parked in the lot, you can shoot on that though im sure the cops dont like it, i havent been busted as of yet (knock on wood)

Do you have to have something to stand on in order to get any shots from that spot? Are approach shots possible without a ladder?

Thanks for any additional info...I've never shot at SNA before, but I'd like to. I assume summer provides the best light / sun angle from this spot?

no you dont have to stand on anything but there is an 8 foot hedge between you and the runway, but approach shots are very possible from anywhere around there, also if you have something like a 100-400 all they way out at 400 will shoot through the chainlink fence without getting the links in. my truck is perfect though to stand on i can see everything from there. anywhere from noon till night time the spot is pefect, you can get some really nice shots around 5-7 as the sun is setting behind you at about 5oclock. here is a shot in the cue taken from over the hedge, but you can get the same shot from the ground in the hole in the fence

and here is an approach:

737 was like 75mm and the a310 was about 100mm

The hedge is a bit of a pain b/c if you're walking along the parking lot and hear and jet you can't see what it is due to the thickness. Provided is a map Brian Bartlett sent to me a while back for spotting.

sorry it took so long to get back to you. Here is a great spot for
taking pictures. It is just on the other side of the terminal. A $5
ride in a taxi. Hope this helps.

Brian

I flew down for the hell of it a month or so back and found an old set of stairs that Signature left. Now it is not on airport land but if Ops drives by they will send the police out of the actual airport to come and find you. Just trust me on that one!

Here is a map I just put together. The black line is the way to drive there the white lines show at what point you'll be able to shoot a/c from each spot.

Odd...

I got the invite from Cameron to come down for the whole trip. I don't think Ralph knows of it. If either of you two could drop me a note that would be great. I just need to know how/when to book tickets and if it's even going to work as I don't want to be a drang and it is in less than 24 hours. Cameron, I tried your cell but you're not there. Oh well... Loven this last min. stuff.

By the way, is their anyone who can tell me if any Southwest special liveries will be arriving after 3 pm into SNA tomorrow? Or any other airline special liveries for that matter?
