Photography At The Beach

Sun Jun 19, 2005 8:35 am

Nice afternoon out, even though we were told off by airport security for being within 3metres of the fence.

Lol, try that here in the US, and you'd be shot by the police without even being questioned!

I still haven't been to the beach on any of my spotting trips to Sydney. Now that I have been awarded my driver's license I will definately be seen there next time I visit.

I'm standing on the ground behind and to the right of Glenn, envious at the fact that they have ladders and I don't. Extreme right is Paul on the orange ladder. To the right of Glenn on the ladder, I'm not sure.

Hi,
Tomorrow is the last day!! Time indeed flew last 9 days with a fantastic spotting opportunities @ YSSY. I have enjoyed the fabulous Aussie hospitality and many thanks to Goran, Glenn, Ian, Chris, Alan, Bruce, Scott, Brenden (both), Norbert, Paul and the rest of the gang.
Glenn.... if you are ever in NY... don't get a cab.... cuz you can drive like Mario Andratti  Smile ...will fit right in the city! Thanks for showing the city that otherwise I would have not seen!
Goran... you started it all.
Chris.... short time but had fun spending late afternoon spotting. I tired cutting from Long term parking lot to Rwy 16L short cut....and made it!! Thanks.
Paul.... give security run for their money!
Ian..... what a great morning on the sand mound!
Alan...sorry bout your camera & not able to spot...but your guidance was invaluable.
Lastly, the mound next to radar field that we all were on Saturday is GONE...they processed it and its almost level!
If anyone ever visits States, especially Tri-state area, let me know... would be my pleasure to show you around.
Raj.

Hey Raj
Sorry to see you go, buddy.
I'm a little annoyed at the disappearance of the mound. It's been there for ages and all of a sudden, they get rid of it. Oh well. Looks like it's ladder time at the mound and give the security a bit of a hard time.
Hope to see you out here again in the near future.

Hi guys,

I am new to this crowd and my so far only attempt at uploading a photo was rejected - but I'll be back  Smile

Anyway, I was just so surprised to see that all the spotters on the photos in this thread are shooting hand-held, I somehow always assumed that tri-pod was the only way to go with the distances that normally are involved etc?

Thanks/Mike

Hi Mike
Welcome to the crowd!
Expect a few rejections. We've all been there but you will definitely get better with practise.
We do use tripods, only at night for long exposure shots. During the day, we go for the superfast shutter speeds and that usually suffices.
All the best

Hi Guys,

I have just got home after 12 hrs 50 from Singapore.

What a great thread, I look much more photogenic than the Cathay!.

Can I just say thanks for a great day out, top weather, great photography, a great steak and beer for lunch and the best company I have ever experienced whilst out photographing.

Sam, didn't realize it was your ladder, haven't checked my shots yet but if the ladder of the master had anything to do with it then they should be great.

Glenn can I say a big thank you for running me here, there and everywhere, you hospitality was second to none.

Raj, it was great to meet you, hope your journey back to the states was OK.

All I can say is the Australian photographers sure know how to treat visiting photographers.

Thanks again to all of you.

Kind regards Simon

It looks that the photographers had a great time at the beach.

The photographers have big zoom lens.

I was in Australia last October 2004, I did not have much time to take photos of aircraft.

Cheers,

Pierre

Here are a couple more from that great Saturday:-

Bad angle!

And the group shot, lots of white out that day. Norbert couldn't decide which was more important, photography or the babes in FHM Australia.

RIP the gravel mound.

I was sneering at the guys for having ladders.

I wasn't there when they were at the Radar field. But I did use Glenn and Raj's ladder when they weren't using it.
That reminds me, I'm going to get a whole new perspective of the runways and heaps better photo ops next week. My brother in law has a boat.

Guess who's going out on the water at 34L touchdowns and takeoffs?

Oh, and here's a question...What do you think all that equipment is worth in Simon's photo of the guys?

Yes, quite impressed you were able to keep up with me (until the last corner) of my beach run. I've had others fail in this department.
Lucky you were following me in your rental vehicle. I've also had car sickness reports from my rapid turns and acceleration.

I agree, after having spent a while driving with Glenn i can agree that he likes to drive! lol Fast turns and fast acceleration and a bit of weaving down the freeway are all good fun though! Looks like you guys had a good day!

I can definatly agree with Simon that the SYD photographers are a great bunch and very hospitable!

I heard my river washed the mound away. It wasn't there a mere 2 days later. I think the Airport Authority saw that we were having too much fun.

Thanks Goran for uploading the shots.
I am back , my flights were fine except on second leg ( YSSY-KLAX-KJFK) I woke up to find out we were in HOLDING PATTERN @ FL370 over Wisconsin 200 miles west of Chicago cause due to thunderstorms Kennedy traffic was backed up and we could not even cross Chicago! As the nice Qantas captian was making alternate landing announcement, he got the go ahead and we left pattern for good and tracked to Kennedy & landed 50 minutes late than the scheduled time. (never experienced HOLD at cruise , so it was new)
That Saturday was great.... excellent weather, a perfect lunch and a thrill trip to see the town and end an afternoon at the beach. Could not have done it without such nice company from local club. Simon sorry bout the next day...hope WSSS was better luck on your return.

Everyone has bad days although I think Dave might have a bad day everyday.
