Nikon Coolpix S1, Does Anyone Own It?

Sun Jun 26, 2005 6:12 pm

Hi all,
Ive been thinking about buying a ultracompact digital camera for "fun" use since i dont have any pockets in my trousers that could carry my D70...

Since i would like to stick with Nikon, i was happy to read about the S1,

So does anyone have it? Any opinions?

TIA,

Denis

(yes, i already had a look at dpreview....)
That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough. I'm going to clown college!

hi denis,

if u are looking at a good looking "comestic" camera APART from posting up aviation action for airliners.net, it's pretty good, and a great fit to shirt pockets. no lens protrusion and minimal moving parts and switches is a strong plus for me. its battery life is good for something this small. it can do a full day of photo excursion easily. and did i mention the 2.5inch LCD. sweet. image quality is beyond mediorce especially in night scenes but colour reproduction is a tad fair/flat for human skin tones, whereas blue skies and landscapes are outstanding. most of all, the FACE PRIORITY mode is the smartest part about the S1. it reminds me of a "aircraft homing head-up-display". tracking is fast and accurate once it "locks" on the nearest subject. excellent features, packing a punch and giving its competitors a run for your money.

but it being so light, there is a problem about stability especially in windy/ unsupported conditions. my girlfriend has it, but its mainly for her candid shots and dinner/party pictures. the optics were great, as for NIKON heritage of ED lens. however the "max" shooting speeds kind of bugs me. 1/350sec is kind of ermm...tough for bright day sports/kids photography. flash lacking range is also a minus.

other than that, S1 is a responsive and nice looking piece of equipment that ermm... makes pple look good (like a handy fashion accessory). its more like a "fun" camera, like what u said. and the black colour version is WOW (minus the fingerprints). best thing is that its cheaper than the panasonic lumix FX-7 and comes with a nifty dock!

i am for the nikon S1, as an ultra-compact.
