Where Are My RAW Files On My Canon 20D?

Tue Jul 05, 2005 5:29 pm

Hi everyone,

I would like to make a few shots in RAW format with my Canon 20D. In the menu of the camera I set it to RAW. So I made a few test shots, connected to my pc but I can't find them!?!

Any idea how I can find them?

Thanks!

You need a program that can read RAW.
Canon software should be able to read them its bundled with the 20d or a newer version of photoshop.
Hope that helps

Hi Alan,

I installed some Canon software :
- USB driver (this I use to get the JPEG photo from my camera)
- Some other program

With this 'other' program I can make shots remotely from my pc, quess handy if used in a studio. I just put the cd in and the setup started automatically so I kind of thought that all software was installed. Maybe there is some other software on the cd that needs to be installed separatly. Will check the cd.

From what Photoshop version should it be able? I have version CS (That's 8 right? losing track of all the version) How would I do this in Photoshop?

Thanks m8!

From memory, it's the EOS veiwer utility you use to transfer the RAW files (it does the jpegs too) to your PC. Using the WIA driver only lets you see the jpegs.

I suggest you go read the manual(s) as all the info is there for accessing and processing RAW files.

Files will be saved as .CR2

Try plugging CF card on a USB card reader and then open a Windows Explorer, search inside the disk unit (X:/) that has the name DCIM, inside it has different numbered folders that contain the RAW files with the termination I said. Copy them into any folder in you hard drive and enjoy.
If you don't have a CF card reader connect the camera with the USB cable and try the same deal, camera needs to be on and have enough battery.

Like I said earlier, I don't think that method works. Not sure about the card reader either, I've not tried it,but worth a go. But you say you've installed the remote capture software. The RAW file transfer is part of that application (EOS Viewer Utility).

Good luck

Sean

Mx330's method does work. It's normally the way I go about things.

I was referring to connecting the camera direct to the PC rather than using a card reader. If there are any RAW files on my card, explorer doesn't see any files or folders at all, unless the communication setting is set to PTP, then it can only see the jpegs, no RAWs. But with that setting at PTP, no other application can access the camera until it is set back to 'Normal'.

Were you referring to the use of a card reader?

Hi All,

Ok, I have found the RAW files in the ES Viewer utility, but I can't copy them.
When I select a RAW photo, I would expect to 'right-click' and choose copy.

Any ideas?

Double click the image to open it.

Press Ctrl+T to open the RAW adjustment toolbar.

Press Ctrl+S to covert and save the file as a jpeg.

Hi all

You really need to get a card reader (dirt cheap) and download them from the camera onto your hard drive.

On saying that, you should still be able to download from the camera to the PC. Works for me.

Oh, you are still trying to copy them to your PC. In the canon Eos viewer, just select all (assuming you want them all), and drag them across to a folder on your pc in the explorer type list on the left. Page W-18 of the software manual goes into more detail.

I think I will get a cardreader as this is a lot more easier.

Thanks again!

I have never used Canon software to copy my shots to the computer. Just installed the drivers, and I removed all the other Canon software a while ago to clear space on the HD.
My camera appears as an extra drive in the Windows Explorer, and I just drag and drop to my C:/ drive. Now I have a cardreader, same principle, just 10x as fast.

Never installed any camera software or driver whatsoever. Just bought a card reader and that's it.

You all convinced me to get a cardreader. So I just ordered one that takes the most common memorycards. It only costs 15 euros.

Indeed, the CDs with both my D60 and 20D are still shrink-wrapped in plastic, as is the USB cable. I use a card reader, just drag the CR2s (CRWs with D60) over to the hard drives, and use Rawshooter and/or PSE3 for raw conversion.

Just make sure the card reader is USB2.0, otherwise the camera direct will be sooo much faster!
