Badcentred - Help Please

Tue Jul 12, 2005 6:53 pm

I had this photo rejected yesterday.

http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mal...il?.dir=4f15&.dnm=6ca0.jpg&.src=ph

Whilst I understand the reason for rejection when the whole aircraft is shown, I am less certain as to what to do to correct the photo when only a portion is present. Assuming that the screener wanted less space at the bootom and left side I have recropped to this.

Would anyone care to comment please?

Malcolm.

Ry: bogus rejection, planes should always have a little more space in the direction its moving, appealed it?
what seems to be the officer, problem?

Ryan,

I imagine it's due to the starboard engine being cut in half.

Malcolm,

As the other say, it is not possible to see the relevant photos.

Ryan - I would have thought that Jeff's comment about the engine would result in a badmotive rejection, not badcentred. I can only assume that the screener had a problem with the amount of gap between the edge of the photo and the nose on the left and the APU at the back on the right. If so, a tough call.

Also badcentered. Do I need to draw a box around it?

No, but you could remove an inch of sky from the top. But that would make it badsize (<3:2 ratio), so you'd have to crop left and right aswell.

Eric

Also remove the dust spot which is visible to my trained eye.

I'll draw a box around that if you want me to.

Malcolm, as the starter of the thread that others have hijacked, correct the link so we can see your stuff. Thanks.

Regards

Gary

Hi Daniel

OK, you spotted one more dust spot than me.

Re-upload making the necessary changes and all should be OK.

Sorry, guys, been otherwise engaged.

Can anyone explain to me as to how to show rejected photos please?
Do they have to be hosted elsewhere?

Jeffm

fair point about the starboard engine however the aircraft is dead central, is this badcentre or badmotiv?
Has the rule been changed if so no problem but there are many shots on DB that are cropped in the same manner as this one.

Chris - yeah i have appealed to no avail

Thanks guys, I worked it out for myself!

This is the rejected photo, rejected for badcentred. Can't post the possibly acceptable version unfortunately.

Hi Malcolm,

That's a new one on me! - an aircraft overshooting into a corn field.

There's something about the shot that's making me want to see more of the aircraft that's cut off on the right. Also the top of the propeller being cut off might have been frowned upon in such a shot.

Just my thoughts  Smile

Whilst easily rectifiable errors should of course be corrected, significant corrections are not always possible as the original image may not be sufficient to allow that. My personal belief is that sometimes the subject is intrinsically more valuable than the composition. Sadly my view isn't always reflected here, so probably the best option is to upload it somewhere else.

Thanks for finding a way of letting us see the image Malcolm.

My first impression when viewing the photo was pretty much in line with Tim's. The fact that you have chosen to take the photo in 'portrait' mode rather 'forces' the propeller and front of the nose to become a central aspect of the motive and to have the top of it cropped off leaves it more awkward in my mind than if the photo had been in landscape. Then, the overall fuselage would have been more the subject than just the nose, and I reckon the cropping of the propeller would have 'felt' better. The way it is now may legitimately leave the criticism that the nose is off to the left too much. (Having said this, many would argue that the focus of the subject does not need to be fully centred for it to make a good photograph - e.g. the rule of thirds.)

But still, if it is the propeller that is the issue for the screener, I would have thought this would have attracted a badmotive rejection rather than badcentred - similar to Ryan's image above.

Looking again at the photo, I feel a landscape crop would not have introduced this factor into the equation so much - though I wonder whether you feel this would detract from your attempt to focus the viewer on the nose and what can be seen there. Is it possible to recrop the original in such a way?

All the best.

I would agree with this Malcolm. A landscape shot would have been better in my view.

Take care

Paul, Tim & Fergul.

Thanks to each of you - comments much appreciated.

I don't think it possible to recrop to landscape without cutting out a large part of the subject and losing the effect of the 'field detour' on the front of the aircraft. This view is most of the original which I only adjusted the level slightly.

I took several other shots at the time the poor lady (no comments about female drivers please) suffered her indignity and another shot taken from the front of the aircraft, where only the wings are evenly cropped, may stand a better chance.

Maybe the subject is a bit 'too 'jokey' for the staid 'its not an airliner' crowd!

Gotta keep trying though!
