Canon EF-S 17-85MM F4-5.6 Is USM

Thu Jul 14, 2005 1:12 am

Well, I'm going to head up to Oshkosh this year, so I want to upgrade my shorter range lens. After reading reviews and checking out prices, I've pretty much decided on this. But I figured it couldn't hurt asking on here... Has anyone had any past experience with this lens? And also, does anyone have a suggestion for another lens (preferably somewhere near 17-85mm, price less than $600)? Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions.

Hi,
I owned this lens since last october and I have to say that I'm really not happy with it. It's good for family pics, the colours are great, AF is ok but... for aviation photography it's way too soft. I used to have the 18-55 and it was much sharper.
I'm trying now to find a good short lens so I can get ride of my 17-85.

I use the 17-85 on a 20D and I am happy with mine.

Here are a couple of pics I have taken with it.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Jim! I read a few places saying the 17-40 f/4L went well with the 70-200 f/4L, which I currently own... so that works out great. Plus the reviews I read said the sharpness of the lens is just incredible. I ordered the 17-40 tonight from Amazon; should be in on Tuesday. Hopefully I'll get some great shots from Oshkosh and maybe even get a few in the DB. Thanks again Jim!

i own the 17-85IS and find it much better than the stock 18-55 the IS works a treat, very wide lens although i wouldnt bother if you want to try and shoot through fences... not gonna happen. even at the 85 end it still has fence in shot, although if theres no fence in the way... great lens and it compliments my 75-300is
