Sigma 70-200 F/2.8 EX Vs Canon 70-200 F/4L

Fri Jul 22, 2005 2:30 pm

Barring the obvious increase in aperture, has anybody here tried both the Sigma and Canon lenses? If so, which would be better quality-wise? I'm still thinking I'll have enough cash by the end of the summer for the 100-400L but at this point I'd like to have a backup plan just in case, and I'm wondering if the extra stops is worth the buying of Sigma over Canon L?

I used to have the Sigma 70-200 2.8 - that is one fine piece of glass.
You will appreciate the 2.8 part! The extra stops saves your life in the more difficult conditions, and the narrow depth of field is very nice. You can also attach a Sigma 1.4 or 2.0 teleconvertor without any problems. Gives you a 400mm 5.6 and the AF still works.

Kind regards,
Erwin

Afternoon,

When I was purchasing my 70-200 my local camera store got in both the Sigma and the Canon so I could try them out.

In the end I purchased the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX HSM and am totally happy with my choice.

The focusing is fast and silent and the build quality is excellent.

Results from the lens are stunning and it is sharp throughout the aperture range.

I also have the 1.4 EX converter and the results are great when using this combo.

The lens has just been updated with a DC version.

I cannot fault the Sigma EX range of lenses.

I have numerous uploads from both the 70-200 on its own and with the converter, have a look if you are interested to see results.

Regards

Eric,
I have the Sigma 70-200 2.8, and as mentioned it is a very nice, fast lens. You need to get a long f2.8 lens at least once in your life.  Smile You WILL notice the difference having the extra stops, and you can use it many places where the Canon F4 will have to go in the bag.

But, knowing where and what you shoot, I'd continue saving for the 100-400L.

Thanks guys, if I can't get the dough for the 100-400 I'll see what Sigma offers. But I still plan on saving for the 100-400.

I have never used the Sigma 70-200mm F/2.8 EX but I can tell you I love the Canon 70-200mm F/4 L.

I haven't experienced the back focus issues that some people have reported. Maybe I got a good copy. The weight, build, price, bokeh, contrast and SHARPNESS are out of this world...the perfect lens!

I will be upgrading to the 2.8 L IS version at some point in the future, but, no complaints about this beauty. Highly recommended.
