I've got an immense amount of respect for the real enthusiasts here and the investment they put into their hobby, but I would be out of my depth with the kind of work they do. The S5500 seemed like a good compromise to me.
Anyway let's see what it does. It's compact enough to go in the glove compartment of the car. I intend buying some decent filters for it as well as they seem to be a necessary purchase.

WhiteHatter, the Panasonic DMC-FZ5 isn't a DSLR, it's a prosumer just like the S5500, it fits in your Coat Pocket and is about the same size. It costs slightly more than the S5500, but it was the Image Stabilization I wanted so I paid the extra. I think I may look into buying some filters, which ones are you looking at?
