So Yeah, Wikipedia Wants To Use A Photo Of Mine.

Wed Aug 03, 2005 1:13 pm

Hey guys,

This is a strange one, I just got an email from Wikipedia.org wanting to use a shot of mine. I have heard of wikipedia.org as users of Trillian know that they provide chat window definitions to words. It appears that it is clearly a non-profit site: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Fundraising I don't see the harm in letting them use a photo to represent an airline in their database? Am I wrong? Thanks in advance!

I'd do it Danny, but I don't shoot for a living. I'm sure there will be other sthat will tell you don't ever give your work away for free, but I think it should be up to the photog. Looks non-profit.

Basically Wikipedia is a huge free encyclopedia. I love the site, and I would give them the image, but not too big as that is just asking for trouble. I'd say 700-800 px wide.

No, don't charge them, it's not commercial use at all. I'd suggest giving them the A.net medium sized version with the copyright bar attached.

They used one of mine about a year ago, which I let them have for free - it is a free service after all. I think I gave them a large version, with the copyright bar. They also added my name at the bottom of the article.

I had a similar request to use a shot of mine of a Pan Am 747 a few weeks ago. I checked out wikipedia and also the free use license they use. It is true they are non profit making BUT, from my research there do not seem to be any restrictions on people adding to or taking from all the on line documents wikipedia produce.

Although I do not profess to fully understand all the legal implications I came to the conclusion that once a picture was on wikipedia there was no way of preventing someone taking it and using it elsewhere. As I was being asked to given permission for wikipedia to use the shot on a free license the entire copyright issue seemed to get rather grey to me. In view of this I declined the request although my normal policy is to allow non-profit organizations to use my pictures F.O.C..

My concern is there do not seem to be any boundaries on what can happen to images in wikipedia documents. They came back and asked if I had any low quality images of Pan Am aircraft that I was willing to let them have so, as a compromise, I gave them a small file size copy of a low quality shot that is not in the A.Net DB. The point being that it is small and fairly low quality so no one is going to be able to use it for serious commercial purposes if the do "lift it" out of the wikipedia document.

My advise is be helpful but do not provide anything you would not be happy to find popping up in other places !

Regards,

John
