Nikon D50? Which Lens? Any Tips/Advice?

Thu Aug 25, 2005 2:14 pm

Hello There!

Finally, I'm buying my first ever Digital Camera and its a dSLR!!! Well, I'll be getting the Nikon D50 within a week or so. I need some advice from experienced people out there. As you can make out, I've never gone plane spotting until now. Will start very soon!

Which lens do I buy along with it? I'm buying body only because I've heard the lens that comes along with the kit is not worth. I'm looking to buy the 70-300mm lens, but there are different companies and models? Can I use a Sigma lens with the D50? Which make and model do you suggest?

Please let me know any other information that I must know, Looking forward to your responses!

Thanks & Regards,

Hi there...

First of all the lens that would come with the D50 is probably quite good, but indeed not for plane spotting - you need a good telelens. Since you've not spotted before, and you're looking for your first telelens to use with the D50, I could recommend looking for a used one. I personally have a rather old Nikon 75-300mm which cost me about $300 (incl. shipping), which I found thanks to the (in my opinion) excellent http://www.kenrockwell.com website. It works great for me (I use the D70).

Of course if your budget allows, you can buy better, more powerful and way more expensive lenses. I'd have to refer you to more expert advice for those kind of lenses...

You can definitely use other lenses than Nikon brand - Sigma does make lenses with Nikon F-mount. I don't have any experience with Sigma lenses though.

You should get Nikkor 70-300mm ED glass. Its just under $300 and its very good.
My question to you is: Why did you got D50??? I believe it comes with SD card not CF. Did you compare D50 to D70s?

Thank You for replying Rafal! Well, yes, I did compare the D50 with D70, D70s, D100 and few Canon models. But the issue is, I cannot afford to buy them at the moment, they are expensive to me. Actually, my options were limited to the Sony DSC - H1, Canon S2 IS and other similar models. Then after getting suggestions from fellow members here, I decided to go for the D50. Yes, it uses SD card and not CF.

$300 is quite a big amount for me, can I get a 70-300mm for about $200? I believe Sigma and Tamron are less expensive...? How about the "Tamron AF 70-300mm Lens f/4-5.6 LD MACRO 1:2"?

Thanks & Regards!

Ipilot777,

I know the deal about money for equipment. I was in your boat few years ago

You can get Nikkor 70-300mm G glass for about $100. But I wouldn't recommend it.
The other affordable lens is Tamron's 70-300mm 1:4-5.6LD I used it since 1999 until 2002. Its under $200 and it worked for me just fine. Right now this is my backup lens.

Am adding this text:
I just saw your question about Tamron. Thats exactly the same lens I have as a backup. It will work fine for you. You can use it for a year and by then you should save some money to buy 70-300mm ED

Few pictures taken with Tamron lens (scanns from the negatives)
