Royal, there are some regulars who hang out there, I'm sure one of them will be along shortly.

I spent a Sunday there back in December. There is an official viewing area at each end of the main runway. Depending on the time of day and the wind direction these can be pretty good. You can also try the top of the Fine Parking lot, but I have heard that you'll likely get chased off (shame, because there's a pretty good view from there).

Traffic is a little slow - mainly WN and various regionals, some biz jets. I do have some shots from there (shameless plugging!):

Royal,

The Oklahoma Air National Guard as F-16's based at TUL as well.

I forgot to add that their unit is one of, if not THE most colorful group of military aircraft in the US inventory.

Hey Royal,

Coming from the SEA area...you'll be VERY bored! Ralph Duenas and myself shoot there regularly. Ralph gets out there a lot more than I do. Steve is correct, its slow, which is almost an understatement. If CRJs, ERJs and WN are your bag, you'll enjoy. We have pretty much tired of it ourselves. There are some good spots though. The official lot on the northside next to the ANG is good in the morning for 18L arrivals. The official lot on the south end next to 36R is good for 36R arrivals and with you being here in October hopefully we'll be getting cooler weather and more northerly winds. The ANG F-16s usually fly just about every afternoon during the week. I think I have seen them on the weekend once or twice. About the only saving grace anymore is that Mercury Air has a transit ramp that sees a variety of military traffic passing through. You gotta be lucky on that though. We caught a Navy C-2 Greyhound a couple weeks ago. Ralph has gotten quite a few different military birds there. Your only heavy traffic will be the daily afternoon FedEx A310 from MEM which is sometimes a 727. The Fine Parking Garage will get you run off. Ralph got chased out the other night after 5 minutes while trying to get a lightning shot. There is a spot also in the middle of the airport near the control tower. Bizjet's parking lot there has some picnic tables you can use to get departures and taxi shots for 18L. You'll need 400mm there and minimal heathaze. I think I've covered most of it, Ralph add to this if I missed anything. Lemme know of any other questions.

thanks for all the info.

Will it still be light at 6pm there at the end of October? I would love to shoot a Delta 737-200.

Question: When you or Ralph utilitized the Fine Airport Parking facility, did you walk to the garage and park elsewhere or bring your own vehicle in and park on the top level?

Perhaps you will be able to make it up to Minnesota sometime. We are about to transition to the nine months of winter from the three months of bad skiing.

That is the tricky part...we ALWAYS pay and park and stay right next to our vehicle. The time we were asked to leave, I was with Jim Hadley, fellow photog and attorney.  Smile Let's just say he doesn't take crap off anyone, which is a good thing most of the time. Long story short, the kid that had told us, paying customers, to leave got in trouble and if Jim calls ahead and talks to the GM to let them know we will be there, things are fine. Ralph was up there at night to get the lightning shot and I don't know if he got asked to leave by the same kid that asked us or not. It's hit and miss there.

Hard to say....I THINK it would still be ok then, BUT...the problem you face is that Delta is rumored to phase out 732 service to here in September. You can still catch the 4xweekly Champion 727.  Smile

Fine Airport Parking can be seen in that shot as the big building in the lower left of that photo. The "offical" south viewing lot is seen as the small lot just underneath that. It's possible to drive the small road at the end of 36R to snag a quick shot from under the approach lighting, but plan strategically, as Boeing security will chase you off if you linger.

I was going to suggest that if you didn't park your own car in their garage that it might help if you did. But you are already doing that.  Smile There are a few garages around the U.S. that I hear of people getting kicked out of all the time, but think it's mostly because people aren't paying to be there. I've had very little, if any, problems shooting in these various "trouble" garages because I pay to park there and I don't get out of the car until it's time to take a shot.

Hey im a new regular to the area, I was there with Ralph in the infamous garage that night shooting as well, I haven't got a chance to shoot with Danny yet, hope to soon. Ralph has told me most of the spots, and if you come at the right times, you'll def. get some Viper, and unfortunatly Jayhwak shots, and there is almost always a T-38 parked at Mercury.

That's odd. The National Weather Service isn't forecasting rain for Tulsa this weekend...  Smile

No one mentioned that the main American maintenance base is at TUL. It might provide a surprise or two, but that's what it would be--a surprise.

Well according to the NWS of Tulsa, Isolated Tstrms are forecasted for tomorrow. So Jason is definetly going to be here tomorrow...Stay home!

As for Royal...get ready for our exciting RJ traffic. It can be very boring but then get pretty exciting sometimes as we get a wide variety of military traffic. I would be glad to meet up with you when you arrive as im sure the others will to.

Both of my parents work for AA at Tulsa Maintenance. You'd think you would have seen an A300 at TUL in the photo database by now, but they usually arrive from JFK or MIA very late at night or early morning.

Other maintenance flights include MD-80s, but they blend in with the rest of the normal traffic. I remember as a kid watching the DC-10's circle around the city doing touch and goes all day...

EDIT:

There's one photo in the database:

Mark,
Yes, you are right. The A300 is there in Tulsa on occassion. Last time I was there, there were six or so on the ramp for door installment and just out of service due to schedules.

Aside from this, FedEx runs an Airbus there now as well...pretty sure this hasn't changed.

I had a couple of pics from my very first visit of an A300 in AA's scheme arriving, but it was downed for badmotiv....oh, well...such is life!  Smile

Have fun, Royal.

Good luck. My parents can't even get family in without special permission. My brothers and I surprised my father at work (I live in Denver and another brother lives in Phoenix) back in Febraruy for his 60th birthday. He had no idea we were coming. It took us almost 3 weeks of phone calls to get permission to even come on base.

The AA A300 are a hit and miss thing, everytime I've noticed them coming in to TUL they either come in during crappy lighting conditions or at night. But in October the late afternoon light will be great as is shown from Steve Brimley and the winds are generally from the north which allows us to use the best viewing area around the airport.
