Open Message To Head Screeners Or Mods...

Wed Sep 14, 2005 7:50 pm

I guessed this would happen...

The intent of my thread was perhaps the same as LIPH's but I had hoped it was better positioned.
It is clear that some folks thought it was a good thing even if the orig thread had been locked... have to admit not all did but hey this is an open forum, well some of us thought it was

As LIPH said the 'big dogs" don't like the little guys getting exposure...

As I said before I don't understand the ambivelence that the "clique" show towards actually promoting photography!!

EDIT.. It has been pointed out that I am in breach of Rule 5 regarding the reopening of inflammatory threads, I do not believe that to be the case I am perhaps guilty of being interested in what LIPH was trying to see.

Interest in new and upcoming photographers is apparently not desireable here.

Cheers

Chris

If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

There are many ways to see the new and up coming photographers on this site.
If your new and upload a single photo that photo will be seen on the 24-48 hour list, If that photo gets to the dizzy heights of top of the day it will be exposed in other places. The brand new photographers name will feature on the search database page which actually "welcomes" the new photographers. On the home page even there is a link to new photographers.

I have 800 odd pics here and it would be nice to get the exposure that the new photog's get! (tongue in cheek)

in my view the new photog's get the exposure, your complaint i believe is unjustified...

When I started at A.net, there were no features like Ryan pointed out. You'd upload your shot and it would immediately sink into the database (which at 15.000 was not as big back then, so that's a minor plus). No top of the day, no statistics with hits, nothing...
Beginning photographers get WAY more exposure than years ago. I don't think there is anything to complain about. And on a side note: 'Big dogs' is not really a nice thing to call people...

Again I think you better keep a better eye on your morning coffee. It is obvious some slipped something in it. Your living in a fantasy land. To address the point you are trying to make. I am close to getting my 20th accepted here. I have began to improve as a photog and have found nothing but good people here willing to help with advice, editing and the like. This also includes the screeners. Which at any time will help you. Provided you go about things the proper way. Something you should do instead of wasting our time and server space with these threads. The quicker you realize the screeners are not just here to screen pictures and that there is no conspiracy and "cliques" here the better off you will be. Not to mention that the screeners volunteer their time as well. They are here to help, not to hurt.

Hi all

This is all concerning LIPH's original thread that was locked.

His comment 'Id like to lunch this freaky pool', which I took to read 'Id like to launch this freaky poll' should have been placed on the Polls and Preferences forum. This posting had nothing to do with photography at all really did it?

Interest in new and upcoming photogaphers ARE welcomed here. Polls for having less than 20 images in the database as not, well not this forum anyway.

Robin has said my thoughts 100%.

I hope this can be sorted out as i would hate for this site to lose a photog like Chris.(reason im saying this is because he just got banned )and his not at all happy with it
Im not trying to piss in his pocket but Chris has always helped me along since i have known him and will always try to help people in any way he can.
His not a photog that started out yesterday his one that has been around for a long time and knows his work.
I think this site and the people that run it can afford Chris the opportunity to voice his opinions

What on Earth is going on?

A guy asks (whether it be in textbook English or not) who the "small" photographers in here are, and the whole world goes crazy. I'm still yet to see what was wrong with what LIPH said and I think the way some reacted was unfortunate to say the least.

As I said to Chris in a message, if LIPH had asked who the ones in here are with over 500 in the database, would it have been met with the same contempt?

The thing that started it all was the Calimero attitude of LIPH. He obviously was frustrated about something and didn't address this with tact. Too bad the thread has been deleted and I can't find the exact words anymore... But when you're talking about a 'clique' and naming people 'big dogs', you're bound to step on someone's toes.

The thing that started it all was the Calimero attitude of LIPH.

I agree that Chris's thread perhaps referred too much to the earlier one, which set people off on the wrong foot.

But I don't get it: the way I understood Chris's thread, it was just an invitation to discover photogs with less than 50 pics, in another way than just clicking the 'new photographers' list. He even explained it further, and I don't think there was any frustration in the way he put it. But that's my impression. In any case I thought it was a good idea.

Immediately reactions started from people saying that such a thing was not needed, that they thought it was a useless post. Well so what? Did it hurt anyone that the post was there?

I do not agree with the conspiracy theories about established photogs, big dogs etcetera. That is simply not true. But I certainly do not agree neither with the way in which Chris's thread including all replies, was simply deleted (not even locked or so). It was IMO unnecessary to do so.

Thanks Ryan and Fergul for bringing up the local photog list. In the same spirit, paraphrasing what was said before, I would still like to know if there is an interest in starting some kind of new list with photographers having less than 50 pics, either by choice or because they are building up their collection. This is not necessarily linked to a particular airport. I don't see why that would be more or less useful or harmful than any other list here, whether it's self-portraits, million-hits congrats, same-time pics and any other recent themes, which are all equally interesting, innocent and motivating. Why is it that all such threads get criticism of some sort at some point? Don't read it if you don't like it, right?

I hope I've not stepped on any toes, I don't have any bad intentions with this.

Open forum? Does it say that somewhere in the rules you agreed to? You have no "rights" to post what you want here. Guidelines and moderators keep the threads pointed in the direction of Johan's choosing. Stray from them and this is what happens. Simple and effective.

As to finding contributors who have less the 50 photos, just check the main photo page, every day there is a list of almost 20 new photographers. What makes you think people don't look at what the new members are submitting?

Why not start a spotlight thread for people with handicaps who have managed to get a photo accepted, or kids under 15, or mothers with 3 or more children, or anyone over 70?

Jeff, nothing personal, but I don't see why you make a comparison like this, given the very detailed explanation above. But anyway, well why not? Why would such a thread need to be prohibited, if any other spotlight threads are OK? I think it is very sad that people keep bashing an idea that is entirely innocent.

I really am baffled by this. All that was asked is who amongst the people in here have less than 20 shots in the database. I think that this is entirely reasonable. We by and large know who the big names are within the forum and this was aimed at the other end of the spectrum - what's the big deal?

I didn't say that Chris, I did say that we have to abide by the forum rules and as Jeff pointed out, stray from them and the thread is locked etc. etc. I didn't think that Chris had broken any, therefore a ban would not be beneficial, a little over the top I thought.

I don't take it personal.  Wink No worries. I don't see why after a locked thread and one deleted, the original poster (and others) thinks he can "drive the ship and ring the bell" after getting some very specific "stick and rudder" from the ship's captain and crew? His ban is unfortunate, but was completely avoidable.

Great! Now Eric beleives he knows why all of us do what we do. Amazing, who would have guessed such wisdom from such an unlikely source? "Destroyed"? butthead

Shouldn't matter much to you anyway as you've told eveyone on one board or another your thoughts about this site, and that you won't upload here anymore... right? Why bother?

What I have said above has absolutely nothing to do with Airliners.net. I think I can pretty well guess why most of us came here in the first place: To look at and in some cases take cool looking photographs of cool looking airplanes. I personally do what I do because nothing to me is better than a good sit at the end of a runway on a nice clear evening. All this bickering and bitching and slamming of the opposite party that's become rampant in this thread and many others here leads me to wonder if most people have lost touch with our hobby, which is just that...A HOBBY.

What I'm trying to say is, all this bitching is only pushing people away.

But you are the biggest "bitcher" of them all, Eric.

Not only on this site, but JP, NYC, and AirWhiners.

It gets old.

You rip on the screening team, the forum moderators, and Johan all over the 'net, yet you come in here and have the gall to say "All this bickering and bitching and slamming of the opposite party that's become rampant in this thread and many others here leads me to wonder if most people have lost touch with our hobby"

You are a hypocrite!

I think you should be sorting your personal problems with other users away from the forums.. Otherwise your going to start a bitch fight like this thread is turning into..

I personally think Royal has hit the nail square on the head.

Just because people people have opposing points of view and choose to speak out on them does not make it a "bitch fest". Heated discussion would be a more appropriate description....nothing wrong with that.

Don't worry Jeff, a lot of people only get involved because a crew member offered an opinion.

You could make the argument that lots of replies, starting from Reply 8 on, could be called "off topic," yet TFSPhoto decided to throw that out after I made my point.

No problem, it goes with the territory.

Most of the 'bad apples' want to know why the screeners won't help people, yet they get mad when we offer our (often differing) opinion on a subject.

When we are quiet we don't care and when we speak up we are self-centered. Do I have that right?

You can't have it both ways.

Clicker, both my posts in this thread were after reply 8 and very much on-topic.

I don't know what differences there are between yourself and Eric, but your contribution certainly wasn't helpful.

I'll ask again, what is it specifically that either Chris or LIPH have said to infuriate so many?

Tim.

Personally, in the past I've found Royal quite helpful, pretty much until he went off the deep end a few months ago along with a few others who shall remain nameless, after that (some people here are confusing the word "after" with the word "before") I stopped uploading.

A guy asks (whether it be in textbook English or not) who the "small" photographers in here are, and the whole world goes crazy. I'm still yet to see what was wrong with what LIPH said and I think the way some reacted was unfortunate to say the least.

Quoting Edoca (Reply 15):
Immediately reactions started from people saying that such a thing was not needed, that they thought it was a useless post. Well so what? Did it hurt anyone that the post was there?

Quoting LIPH (Reply 17):
As simple as that.

Quoting Edoca (Reply 20):
Why would such a thread need to be prohibited, if any other spotlight threads are OK? I think it is very sad that people keep bashing an idea that is entirely innocent.

Quoting DC10Tim (Reply 21):
All that was asked is who amongst the people in here have less than 20 shots in the database. I think that this is entirely reasonable.

Quoting DC10Tim (Reply 30):

Yes the screeners do a excellent job on the forums, helping others out with images, advice and such.. full credit to them.. after all they dont have to do it.. but when your posting crap relating to one of your personal fudes with another user.. thats when you make yourself look like a ass.

Couple of things of interest here.

1) It's a harmless topic. Not really necessary to ban anyone, is it?

2) 'Big Dogs' is a colloquialism, Eduard. I don't think LIPH really thinks some contributors are literally large, hairy and canine, although I confess I haven't actually asked him.

3) King and Smith, put your handbags away.

Cheers

I guess I don't get it. Perhaps I am not cut out to be a 'crew' member.

I was sharing my opinion. You have called it a 'personal attack.'

Now you are sharing your opinion. So now you are attacking me?

I need some time to think about all of this. I feel as if I have reached my personal limit.

Well maybe you should consider your postition as a crew member, the fancy title still doesnt justify you attacking other people on the forum, nit picking, name calling e.t.c.

I could sit here and call you or any other a.netter every name under the sun.. but ive got common decency not to, if you have personal fudes with other people.. sort it out between the two of you, no need to keep bitching at one another in every forum post that comes up..

Take some time from a.net, go out and just stand by a runway somewhere and take pictures of whatever comes along. Have a beer in the process, just go get refreshed. A.net isn't the be all and end all of planespotting, I guarantee you will feel refreshed when you get done.

Everyone needs to get over this and fast.

Once again some has had an opinion about something and has been shot down in flames for doing so. Anybody would think that opinions are not allowed to be posted after reading this.

Some people need to settle down a bit. I don't understand why all this has gone as far as it has.

JeffM - your post was unthoughtful and out of line. I HAVE a disability and I am very angry that someone on here would post that. I don't want to reminded about it every 5 minutes. Most people that have disabilities feel the same way.

Honestly everyone, grow up. Post nice threads, let us look at photos and help people out with their photo problems. Like this site has intended.

Martin

PS - I'm sorry to hear of Chris' ban. A good photographer. I enjoy his photos greatly.

No, it was just a hypothetical question using handicapped individuals as a random selection of the population for the sake of discussion. Nothing more. Try not to read so much into things....

So now you speak for "most people with disabilities" too? Or are you just making a generalization? I'll ask my neighbor who gets around in a wheel chair (though he doesn't consider it a handicap) if he voted for you o.k.? Heck, I'll ask him if he has even heard of you, though I doubt it. If he did, then I'll believe your statement, and let everyone know you're telling the truth.

If your looking for an apology, don't hold your breath. Sorry, that's the way I see it.

Well as of right now im a "small" photographer, but it won't remain that way, just like any other small photographer who is fairly interested in this type of photography.

What an excellent summary - I've put you on my RU list!

Martin - I sympathize with you. I've been participating in this forum for about 9 months now and can say that Chris isn't one of the "hotheads" who usually get entangled with this kind of thing. I really don't see what all the fuss is about when someone asks to find out who has only a few shots uploaded. No wonder why people get the impression there is a 'clique' amongst a.net photographers.

It amazes me that two threads were locked for what would appear to be no reason, yet this one, where people are really airing their laundry gets left untouched.

At the end of the day, we all love aviation photography and I don't see what the deal is here. I think people are losing sight of the bigger picture.

Thats what surprised me about the banning of him. A real shame and yeah this whole subject has gone totally overboard. I hate to think where it may lead too.

JeffM - I don't speak on behalf of all, thats correct. I was just upset with the remark thats all. Everyone deals with remarks like that differently. I obviously deal differently with it compared to your neighbour.

Lets all leave this subject so we all don't get banned! Lets all get back to photography.

Mabe it was Jeff but it's not going to achieve anything. Chris just asked a question and he gets slammed with a ban!

This is real sad .
A paying member of this site gets banned for no CLEAR reason is beyond me.
What was the crime that a ban was the only avenue .
Im also surprised that this issue has been allowed to go so far.
If the administration of this site is happy with the way this has been handled then its no use even posting anything .
But it would be a real shame to lose a photog of the caliber of Chris it would be no ones loss Except for here.
