Going To SFO, Help Needed

Fri Sep 16, 2005 4:29 am

Hi all,

I´m planning a 7 day trip to San Francisco together with my girlfriend, beginning hopefully on Oct. 6, ending Oct. 13th. We´ll come from and go back to MUC with the LH 346.

Apart from looking for some spotting advice/company i am hoping to get some help finding place to stay in Town, preferably a B&B or a small hotel.

Maybe some of the local guys could provide some info about which part of the city i should look for, or maybe someone has already been to a nice B&B.

For the spotting thing: I hope i´ll be able to talk my girlfriend into coming to SFO early on the departure day, to get into some spotting action.
I think the plane leaves at 2130 or so local time, so i´d like to go to SFO around noon.

Thanks for your help in Advance,

Denis

Hi Denis !

I spent (also with my girlfriend) a few days in SFO in June.
The first thing I see was the big mistake to leave my 500mm lens at home.
We had a nice Hotel (Red Roof Inn) with only 5 minutes to walk to the spotter place where many of the A.net pics are taken.
In this pic the blue circle shows the way with a nice view to 2 RWY's.
It's a far distance so you will need a good lens.

I'm sure some locals can give you more and better support.
Enjoy your days in/at SFO !

Regards

Werner

Hi Denis!

For the hotel also check out your local "Lufthansa Reisemarkt"-office in the LH-FOC at MUC. They should also have good deals on hotels and possibly even on B&Bs. I spent a long weekend in SFO in March and got a good rate for the "Sir Francis Drake"-Hotel in downton San Francisco through them. Plus - it is very convenient as everything is organized before hand...

Cheers,
Mike

Oh really?
Normally i try to avoid the "Reisemarkt", because the ladies there are quite "special", however, if you think it´s worth it, i´ll give them aother try... Smile

Well, no guarantee given here, but at least my experience with them was not too bad. Plus - all it'll cost you to try it is probably 30 minutes...   Wink

Cheers,
Mike

Denis,

I replied to your e-mail but here it goes again. SFO is almost my second home.
Friends live up north and I try to visit at least once a year, but you might check with the real locals like Ben W, Manas B or Richard Silagi.
As for the hotel, since you wanted to have a hotel in the downtown area
Check the LH crew hotel located right on Market St.
Renaissance Park 55 or if you want to stay around the waterfront, Holiday Inn, Hilton , Hyatt, Sheraton are all located within walking distance to Fishermen's Wharf, Pier 39 etc.

Last year I stayed at the Hilton FW, a very nice hotel and only a few blocks away from all the attractions.

With your airline discount you should be able to get a decent price.

As for the mm.......even with the TC your max. will be around 600mm.
It is not great but ok for Bayswater Park and RWY 28L and R.

Vasco,
thanks, i got your mail, no time to reply yet since i´m away from home right i now...

I will check the hotels you suggested.

Michael, i´ll try the Reisemarkt, as soon as i have the chance, i guess i can spair 30 minutes...

...I just found Bens and Richards website, which has a lot of useful information regarding the off airport spotting places.

http://flygga.tripod.com/

Looks i could be ok with 400mm digital turning into 600mm film.

At one point however they say that the best spots will be inside the airport, but accessible only to ticketed pax.

That´s me!!!

Where are those spots and should i choose them over the Bayswater and other spotting places, concerning my zoom range?

What do you guys think?

If I were you I would do both, shoot inside and outside. Since your flight will depart around 9.30pm you have until 6.35 pm (sunset on Oct 13th)
By that time most of the interesting stuff has come in and gone out.

The international Terminal offeres some huge windows (not tinted) and you should be able to get some decent shots, even at night.

You can also ride the Airtrain, might catch a few good ones there as well

If you have a car, or even if not - maybe a bus or airport connection transportation, maybe visit San Jose. It's discussed on the flygga site, too. Has a small outdoor observation deck in the older terminal that has a good view of landing planes (operations usually from the south, unless bad weather), plus some of the ramp area. You'll see some stuff there that doesn't go to SFO, notably Southwest, but also AA 777, a number of cargo carriers, RJ's, bizjets, etc. Also good views of departures from the parking garage. Both are morning spots because they look west.

Hi,
thanks for your inputs so far.
I´ll probably keep more to the inside shooting, since i don´t have a car, and i´ll probably be wearing a business suit due to LH´s Dress code...

Anyway, i just learned that i will arrrive just in time for SF Fleet week, nice coincidence.

Will anyone else be there, is it worth to take pictures there?

The show itself is great. I have seen it, but that was years ago. The blue angels will be there, as well as an assortment of other aircraft performances. You should have a great time.

Once again; Hi,
So i´m off to SFO tomorrow, if we get seats on the flight....

The A346 will will fly will be D-AIHF, damn, i hoped for the Star Alliance bird.
Anyway, it would be great if someone could take a picture of us landing, altough it´s pretty close to sunset...

If anyone is going to see the Blue Angles or the Air Race at Fleetweek and wants some Company, feel free to contact me via my Profile.

Off we go....

Anyway, i´m on the plane right now, approaching Greenland at FL360...

Quoting Beechcraft (Thread starter):
Well come from and go back to MUC with the LH 346.

I want to fly one of these someday. I think it's one of the best looking planes from the outside. I was at MUC last year but didn't see the 346's. I wish we had your viewing mountain over here.

Quoting Beechcraft (Reply 10):

A planespotter spotting in a suite... now that would be worthy of a photo.  Big grin

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Almost makes up for no PTV's on LH in Y.

I wonder if SF is worth the drive from the LAX area.

Hi again,

San Fran has been good to me so far...
Nice airshow including the Blue Angels and the LH 747 crossing overhead when i walked on Golden Gate Bridge and so on.
Oh, and yes a very nice city, too  Smile

Now, does someone have some advice for me where to buy camera equipment, especially bags and memory cards over here?

Any help would be appreciated,

Denis

Denis, one camera store I know is Calumet:

http://www.calumetphoto.com/ctl?ac.u...ompStoreLocDetail&ac.comp.locID=SF

I've never been there myself but I've seen it recommended by others on this board. Calumet is a real camera store that has good selections and inventory as far as equipment goes. But you'll probably be paying full MSRP.

If you want to get bags and memory cards, it may be cheaper to go to general electronic stores, such as Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA/GoodGuys. They have various locations throughout San Francisco.

Hope that helps.
