Tired Of Rejections....

Sun Oct 09, 2005 3:32 am

I have had few rejections (and they really all we were justified I must admit) therefore I have finally bought a new camera..... Canon 20D! So watch this space for more pics from me which hopefully are accepted. My old camera was a point and shoot canon.

Be careful your going to get lectures on how this site makes you buy expensive equipment just to get pics accepted. See this thread.

From my point of view, enjoy your new camera and best of luck to you! Hope to see some of your work here soon!  biggrin

You have got that backwards don't you? I have read what you write and what others write and it all comes around to how this site is negative in many ways. From screening pics to encouraging kids to buy the best equipment just to get pics accepted here. I am sick of the propaganda. Let individuals do what they want and enjoy the hobby and this site.

Congratulations on your purchase. When I upgraded, I was delighted - I looked more professional and my acceptance rate is much better. I took the first chance I got to upgrade, and don't regret it one bit!

Congratulations on your new camera.  bigthumbsup
I recommend you start looking into shooting RAW right away. It is a slight learning curve but the benefits are huge. For the last 6 months I've shot nothing but RAW because the amount of information the RAW files have gives me much more freedom and options when postprocessing. Once you go RAW you won't look back.

Cheers,
Siggi Ben

Congratulations on your new purchase, Since I see you already have some experience and basic camera knowledge, you should be able to produce some amazing pics with the 20D.

Thanks for the encouragement. I really did not buy it ONLY to get a higher number of pics accepted, the purchase was for Multiple reasons, one of which the ability to place a telephoto zoom lens on the camera, which of course is NOT possible on a point and shoot. Although I must admit I was expecting the comment that one does not need a high end camera to take good pics.

Thanks, too, for the advice about shooting in RAW mode. I did, however, read a review on the 20D's in built conversion software which apparently is very good, and the difference between a camera JPG file and a RAW file converted on a computer is difficult to see. Is this correct/true.

Why is the single most important and pressing issue in some peoples lives to get pictures accepted at Airliners.Net?

If it is, they have much bigger problems they don't realize yet.

You really won't notice a change in picture quality directly from the camera. The difference between RAW and JPEG straight out of the camera (visually speaking) is that you'll notice when opening the file to edit it, the editing process is much different, and much more versatile. For example, with Jpeg you can't change the white balance, but you can when editing .RAW files. Also, RAW editing is somewhat similar to editing in a darkroom when making a print.

Here is a link to an article by Michael Reichman at www.luminous-landscape.com that explains the benefits of shooting RAW.

This website is a great place to learn a lot about photography and it is absolutely free and very professional.

At 1024x683 px...it makes 0 difference. Yes, RAW leaves you more options in the post processing. But I found I've never needed it for uploading photos to sites such as these.

Agreed, though sometimes I'm too lazy to set the white balance when taking night shots, or the white balance I have set is just a tad off and can be easily fixed in RAW.

Sure you can, why would you say that Eric? There are lots of tools, ColorWasher is just one.

Yeah, it takes a long time, and there are easier ways to do it!  Wink

Hello,
So you are from Calgary as well I see.
Lets see some examples of the rejected shots if avail.
20D is a mighty expensive piece of equipment but will probably be worth the money through quality pictures.

Good Luck.

Exactly, I moved up from a Nikon coolpix 8700 to a D70 and never looked back!

Yes! Mikephotos gave me that advice a year ago. You will never go back!

You are overstating big time. People take this hobby very seriously and work hard toward getting their pictures accepted here since it's the best site of it's kind. When you accomplish it you get a great feeling. I think it's healthy to work toward this but I don't think it's this pressing issue you make it out to be.

Right, forgot about that, but those are third-party plugins aren't they? Unlike Jpeg when you're in Photoshop with a RAW you can do it all in photoshop, with just photoshop.

Takes me all of 30 seconds, I find it quicker than Jpeg.

Nah, I don't shoot airplanes with RAW. I shot a lot of high school yearbook photos recently, some of those I shot RAW, but 90% were just large .JPG. I find if you can nail the exposure correctly in-camera, there is little need for RAW in post processing.

Yup, it's a pluggin, and I use it with a mask action so it only takes one click to make the correction, the other 29 seconds are used on other pictures.  Wink I know RAW can be useful when you have strange conditions to shoot in, I just try to avoid them.

Agree with that, but... not everyone shares your expertise at nailing the exposure.
I found with my 10D and planes I could get jpgs that were as good as processed RAW but when I had to use the D30 for a month I needed to go back to RAW to get the best out of them.

Some (some, not all!!!) folks rely on RAW to recover from a lack of skill, knowledge, attention to detail at the shooting stage..it is always better to get it right in the camera, much more satisfying as well.

Having said that I will switch to RAW if the situation gets difficult!
