Settings For An Event Like "Red Bull Air Race"

Mon Oct 10, 2005 6:53 am

hi guys
we have the Southern Hemisphere round of the "Red Bull" air race coming up next month, was wondering what the best camera settings would be for an event like this...using the 20D and 50-500mm lens...any info would be great!

thanks.

Really... Where? Would like to see that!!

Settings... mmm fast moving (small) planes and props, there is a challenge.
I would be practising my panning if I were you!!

Wouldn't be going for 1/4000, certainly give you sharp subject but totally frozen on totally frozen background, won't make for a terrribly satisfying photo!

Wow! Tell me where????

I agree with Chris, Wouldn't be going as fast as 1/4000th. Depends on what you like. For blurred backgrounds and to give the feel of fast moving, keep the shutter speed low. What everything standing still speed it up. But I wouldn't go to 1/4000th. It would also depend on the weather on the day.

In other words, its hard to say!!!

Go for it Monty, I was going mad when they came to Ireland at the Rock of Cashal,  banghead . I had already booked my holiday to Slovenia. I would love to see that. Do a search in the DB Monty, a few cracking shots here and here are two, e-mail the photogs and see what settings they use.

Have fun mate,  grumpy  wish I was there.

The shot pointed out in the above reply was made with a shutter speed of 1/400.

One more thing.
If they have a training day the day before the race or in the morning of the race day, make sure to be there already. Just to make you familiar with the course and figures they are flying for selecting your preferred viewpoint.
