Why The Hits Difference? (Caution:Self Plug Ahead)

Tue Oct 11, 2005 11:16 am

Hello all,
Any idea why the 737 photo didnt get much views when compared to the Mad Dog's despite 737s +ve aspects...
a) More Color and shiny
b) 1500px wide?

Hi Vasanth,

I've seen your pictures earlier. Eventhough I viewed them both in large, for some reason-unknown to me  Smile I prefer the MD. Perhaps it is more interesting because it is the same aircraft and somehow more appealing to the viewer???  Confused Nonetheless, they are nice, well composed and interesting photos.

2 of the same aircraft in shot and plus who doesn't love and MD-80 I sure do!

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Ivan, Aaron,
No one takes pictures of MD-80s here at DFW  Sad...its a very common bird. Nowadays, when I see a MD80, I just sit in my car...never care to take my cam out.
Anyways thanks for your comments.

What does the # of hits have to do with your desire to be a better photographer?

I completely agree with that last part. The MD-80 is one beautiful jet.

Edit: A few months ago, I was lucky enough to catch 3 MD-80's in one shot. That photo is one of my favorites.

I think the MD80 shot is a little more balanced and pleasing to look at myself.
Both are lovely shots though.

lol...this thread cracks me up. Meanwhile, in another recent thread, everyone swears that hits don't matter!

Nobody likes to admit it, but hits mean a lot. Why else do you post your photos online?

Vasanthd, your caption may have helped too. There is a question in it, perhaps people expect to see the answer in the photo.

Maybe just to share? I like getting hits as much as the next guy, but I am here to build a diverse portfolio and share my work with people around the world. Nice comments in the box are better than hits to me anyway.

One thing I try to do to avoid looking like a hit seeker making people think that is the only thing that matters to me, is not posting my photos as a plug while they are still in the 24-48 hour range. To me it is just tacky.

Lets face it, NG 737s usually are pretty boring viewing material. They're as common as flies and will be around for decades. The MDs are more like proper aircraft Smile They are louder and make smoke.

I think a point has been missed here by Vasanthd and others.
Forget what aircraft are in the photos and look at the composition of the two.
The image with the two MD80s is a near perfect composition, the 737 not so. It happens to have two aircraft but the composition is nothing like as good.
Using the compositional tool of the rule of thirds....
Imagine a noughts and crosses grid on the image, then the lines are the most important compositional lines, the intersections the most important points.
Now compare the two images and the compositional differences are evident.
People have clicked the better photo, probably without ever knowing why.
Whilst these rules are made for breaking, they have stood the test of time, predating photography by many, many centuries.
Hits are a much newer phenomenon but the reasons we like the pictures are ageless !

Composition is the first preference...but I have one more question...Do people like to see pictures in High resolution...I mean like the 737 picture in 1500px wide?

Personally I don't because it's more difficult to view. You have to scroll to see the whole picture. I upload at 1200 x ... because it probably works for most people and me as well Big grin
