Advice On New Canon Digital SLR

Fri Nov 25, 2005 4:01 am

Well, I've saved up some cash and I'd like to get into Digital SLR photography. I don't know much about it, but a guy I know said he's show me some stuff. I'm trying to decide between the EOS 20D, Rebel XT, and possibly the Nikon D50. I can get the EOS 20D without a lens for about 1100 USD with a lens, but I'd assume I'd need another lens for aviation photography and for distance. What sort of telephoto lens would I need for taking shots of aircraft at about 6-10K feet? Should I stay with Canon lenses?

Also, which camera do you think would be best? I'm leaning towards the EOS 20D and the Rebel XT, but still I'm unsure of how to proceed so I'd like to ask you guys what you think. Don't flame me! :P

Thanks in advance!

If you can afford it, the 20D is the best in your shortlist. But are you saying 10,000 feet above you or at 10,000 feet? I think you should try to get near an airport for a start and for a lot more aircraft movements.

Good luck.

The Nikon d50 isn't actually a Canon.

Of the cameras you listed, the 20D is probably the best. You will definitely need the 100-400mm IS if you are shooting from 10,000 feet.

I switched to Canon 20D in July after being a Nikon user for 20 years. I picked up a 100-400L and 28-135 so far. I plan to get a 500mm (Sigma f4.5 or Canon f4) next summer. So far I'm very pleased with my decision of buying Canon 20D. You may check photos on this site or more of mine works on my site bluesky49n.com.

Thank you very much for you suggestions. I will probably go with the Canon 20D.

Hi Guys,

I just got my 20D a week ago - it is much more camera than the 350D of mine it replaced, and costs a lot more too. I would definitely recommend the 20D if your budget permits.

I have a Sigma 80-400 EX Optical Stabalised lense, and I have some shots in the upload queue, so if they are accepted for the DB I will post you a link so you can get an idea of the combination...

Cheers
