Old Scans - Gobsmacked!

Wed Dec 07, 2005 10:15 pm

Have just been sitting in amazement looking through Peter de Groot's old Slide copies. The quality is amazing. I don't know which scanner he is using but they do look as if they were taken yesterday with a DSLR.

Brings back a lot of memories.

Enjoy.

A well exposed slide, a proper scanner and a proper scanning technique do the trick. They are a joy to screen and an example for many other slideshooters out there.
Well done Tim... ehh... Peter!  cheeky

Great stuff, indeed. His pre-1990 work.

Hi Martin

The scanner I use (I scan and upload all of peter's shots) is nikon Coolscan IV. The slide itself though is what really ensures the high quality scan. Most are Kodachrome 25, which scans better than anything I have tried so far.

Hopefully I can free some time up in the future to upload some more of those 70s shots. From scan to upload it can take as much as an hour per slide, so needless to say you can't upload 50 at a time.

Anyway thanks for the kinds words, Peter will appreciate it too I'm sure.

32 years ago! This looks fantastic.

I use this pic as a benchmark because it was taken when I was a little over 1 year of age, and the shot is an absolute A++. One of my Anet favourites without a doubt.

Here's to many more of Mr. Peter de Groot's Kodachromes!
I dont know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone

Top quality scans that are always a pleasure to view. If only my trust HP S10 was able to produce work like this. I'm currently working through Frank's slides and uploading the odd shot that scans nicely.

Tim, send me your address and I'll send you some slides to scan for me mate!!!!! Gotta get Frank to 10,000!

Keep up the super work!

Great examples of quality throughout the process. It is too easy to be complacent by thinking shortcomings in photography fundamentals can be fixed in post processing. Peter's images are wonderful to look at.

Please do! Looking forward to seeing more from the good old days.

It's shots like these that make you think going back to slides isn't a bad idea!

I've added a Nikon Coolscan IV to my Xmas wish list.

Cheers,

Martin.

Yes, the quality of those slides is amazing.

I once was invited to a slide show at Peter and Tim's home. Not one or two, but slide after slide pin sharp and full frame from all over the world.

Makes you feel small and sets you thinking: when was the last time I managed to capture a full frame action shot? Hmmm, viewfinders were bigger in that time, that -must- be it  sarcastic .

His collection is first class and the quality of his scans just spot on.
I think we know who should write an article on scanning slides for web browsing!!
Seems like Peter's equipment and workflow is just about perfect.
Great shots.
