Bad Dark?

Tue Dec 13, 2005 1:46 pm

Hello all,
I got this rejection today

Reason: Bad Angle, Bad Dark.
I will fix the angle (a bit of clock wise rotation). But I cannot find any darkness issue here. Is there anything that I am missing? Help!

Nice shot Vas. I have had a few in the same type of lighting rejected for dark, and I went as far as comparing histograms from my accepted photos I felt were darker than the reject. The shot below is one I compared my rejects to.

Hard to say, I'd just try to lighten it a little, as it is not too dark at all to me. And maybe I am totally off base, but it could always be a mischecked box, you never know. Good luck.

It does seem dark to me. I tried playing with it in PS and it could use some lightening.

Unless you bracket on a stationary object, comparing histograms is pretty much useless.

IMO, it's definetly dark. Hope you don't mind, but i had a go at it in photoshop. There was a small gap on the right of the original histogram, so I corrected it. Also, I moved the center slider over to the left which helped a lot and didn't increase grain much. You could probably push the center slider over a even little more.

This is a similar problem to what I felt I was encountering here:
Still Having Trouble Taking 'sunny' Photos (by DC10Tim Dec 9 2005 in Aviation Photography)

Careful not to overdo it when shifting that middle marker over to the left, as you'll lose all those nice colours and end up with a very bland looking shot.

Obviously missing something....

Hi Vas - hope your re-upload makes it in!

May I hijack your thread and post my "attracted to the dark side" problem here as well?

I just had the following rejected:

Obviously backlit and hence dark, but I still liked the general look&feel (personal taste I guess).

Using some highlighting, here's a reworked version. Do you think this would be OK or would it still be too dark?

Any other tips are welcome. I also have a non-backlit version a bit later in the landing sequence, but that one doesn't show the full aircraft in the frame, so I'd prefer optimising this one first.
