Did You Upgrade Your Camera Gear In 2005?

Sun Dec 25, 2005 8:25 am

With all these year-end threads, I thought I'd start one about our beloved equipment. If you made an upgrade this year (or if Santa is bringing you one tomorrow), post some details here! Feel free to plug a shot from your new gear if you would like!  bigthumbsup

For me - I sold my Canon Digital Rebel (300D) on E-Bay after purchasing a Canon 20D. I also picked up my first L glass - the 70-200 F4, as well as a 50mm 1.8 and a 2.0x extender.

My new 20D and 70-200 F4 L combination was used to capture this image:

I used to have an EF 50mm 1.8 Mk I but sold it a couple of years ago since the AF-mechanism broke down. Started to miss this fast prime so I decided to get a new EF 50mm 1.4 in June; awesome lens...

...just nice for window views on a full-frame body. And for other types of photography.

I've also got a 20D - my first digital body - last month which will be used mainly for non-aviation stuff as well, although I might bring it along to the airport for creative stuff. Side-ons are still reserved to slides for me ...but if I like it that might perhaps change  Wink.

Got my first DSLR in June of this year (350D) along with the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens and my EF 100-300mm. Upgrade was from my beloved Minolta Dimage Z2. The result is 30 shots on here so far with this being my first:

I downgraded my gear  Sad

Because my stupid ass Digital Camera went faulty over the summer, I am back to shooting Prints with my old 1979 Nikon EM Camera with my 60-300 Tamron lens.. How depressing of a year for me. I also threw all my money away for school to afford something that many of you folks shoot with: A DSLR.

I am hoping that next year can bring some better luck.
In a few days, BOXING DAY I may buy a new digital camera but it will be an ultraslim so still no good for aviation.

Sold my D30 and the Vivitar 19-35mm, since I never really shoot wide angle anymore. Kept the 28-135 IS, and bought:

Canon 10D with battery grip
Sigma 70-300 DG APO, which was sold in favor of:
Canon 70-200 f/4L, and 1.4X II extender
Canon 50 f/1.8 II
Canon Rebel G (my reintroduction into film, after ceasing use of the Pentax ME a while back)

and the oddity:
Sigma 600mm f/8 Reflex
--This one is going to get punted pretty soon, though, as I just didn't end up using it, though it does have some interesting near-macro capabilities--i.e., not really enough magnification to be true macrophotography, but you can shoot from across the room, rather than right up near your subject.

And then, of course, I bought a Tamrac 613 to haul all that crap around in, which I think is the biggest bag you can actually fit under an aircraft seat, so now the question is--just how much gear can I stuff inside it?

I had the Canon 300D with its kit lens (18-55mm) at the beginning of the year. Early in 2005 I decided to change my camera body and started looking at the 20D. I bought it a few months later, in April, along with a Tamron 28-75, which is a pretty decent lens for the money I'd say.

That was one of the first pictures I got with my new combo (20D and 100-400). I was pretty happy with it, since I got this shot from runway 24R while it was landing on the left side.

Actually I'm glad I made the move to the 20D. It's really a great piece of equipment, and with the 100-400, it makes for an awesome combo.

Cheers,

No major upgrades since my 2004 overhaul, however I did get the following gear:

-Manfrotto 055Pro MF3 Magfibre tripod legs
-Manfrotto/Bogen 488RC0 ballhead
-Canon remote shutter release
-Another spare Sandisk 1GB Ultra II CF card

Hopefully 2006 will see the addition of a big prime to my kit, maybe the 300mm f/2.8L or f/4L IS...  bigthumbsup

Here's to another year of great photography!

The only equipment upgrade I've made is a 70-200 f/4 L, which I'll have in my posession later today.  bigthumbsup

Not to mention spotting at numerous new airports, with new airlines and types, all thanks to you. Which was better than the new lens!  bigthumbsup

My only lens upgrade was from the 18-55 kit lens to a 17-40L, which was definitely worth it.

Furthermore I bought a Speedlite 430EX. I really like it, really was more than necessary to get an external flash for non-av shooting.
I admit, wanted to buy the 580EX at first, but I instead decided to buy a 40GB PD7X image tank, from fellow A.net user Dean Barnes. Thanks by the way!

I'm still looking forward the the "20D replacement" supposed to come in February / March, decided not upgrading to a 20D if there could be another good camera following soon.

Happy shooting to all of you with your new equipment Santa brought, good conditions and sales to all of you.  Smile

cheers,
F.

Another year in moving forward.

Canon 300D + kit lens (Bit of an upgrade from an IXUS400  Smile )

Canon 75-300 USM IS
Battery Grip
No where near as many spotting trips to the local as I would have liked!

Next on my list I'd say is the 70-200 F4 L though think I'll have to keep saving for a new PC first so I can edit shots without grinding to a halt! My poor wallet.

I have my eye on that 50mm 1.4 lens as a cheapy. Must investigate further.

Merry Christmas All,

Well now that I have some money from Christmas and birthday, I think its time for me to go out and buy a film scanner. I have had my eye on the Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV for a while now, and now that I finally have some money, I will be ordering it in the next few days. Sure will be nice to start uploading shots again, since I gave up with my flatbed scanner about 4 months ago.

Hey....that is the exact same package I had! Although I still use the Vivitar. I upgraded to a 100-400L in 2005 (and 10D in late 2004). I really need a better wide-angle lens though. That is on my list for 2006 and maybe a 20D or whatever comes out at PMA in February - don't know yet. I like the wide EF-S lens but the problem I would need to get the 20D to use it.

In March 2005 I started with an Olympus C-765, then upgraded to the 300D + 75-300 in May, then bought the 70-200 f/4 in Sep. and I also added the 10-20 from Sigma, but I have yet to try that one out!
Now I am thinking of adding the 50-500 from Sigma for 2006.

Hi all...

I must be the odd one here:

I've bought a second hand lens for my Hasselblad CM501, a Variogon 140-280/5.6 Schneider zoom lens ( they stopped manufacturing it about 15 years a go ).
Didn't spent a cent on my digital gear..

Cheers

Recently I've upgraded from an Olympus C-740 to a Canon 350D with the 18-55mm kit lens (though USM) and a 75-300mm III USM (non-IS). The latter isn't my dream long lens but it'll do for the time being. Here's a couple of examples taken with my new gear -- nothing special though, because I'm still getting to grips with it.

Loved long lenses for a long time and this one was more than worth the wait.
Quality is unmatched and allows some cool results with the TC.

Got me a 20mm f/2.8 AF-D Nikkor, a 35mm f/2 AF-D Nikkor, a Nikon SB-800, a Nikon MC-30, an an HN-3.
Now I only need an 85mm f/1.8 AF-D Nikkor and I can retire my venerable Tokina 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro.

If price/quality development goes as expected I'll (given budget of course) likely get a DSLR second half of 2007 to complement my current complement of 3 SLRs.

Long tele primes are still too expensive to contemplate, though the 300mm f/4 AF-S Nikkor looks interesting if I've money left at the end of 2006.

it does a great impression of a machine gun with the 8.5 shots per second and in my opinion is worth every penny.

Ohhh dear! And then comes furniture for the baby's room and so on and yadda-yadda-yadda. Remember the old days of going to the airport whenever you wanted ....!

:D Not to worry... We've been living together for 5 years already. I know what to expect, not that much will change.  Smile Kids are long-term plans, I'm not ready for those mongrels yet... hehehe...

Don't get to old... not because 'you're not going to be useful' but is so nice to have a baby!.. My recommendation: have one tomorrow and another in 4-5 years Big grin (I see in your profile that you're around 30 already... cammon!

On-topic, yes, I upgraded, I bought a Nikon D70 this year.

Off-topic, believe it or not, but having a baby this year was a good reason! So soon-to-be-dads, don't despair - if you've got cash left, spend it on photo gear rather than buying a video cam!

On topic again: But I still have my 5MP Sony DSC-V1 I bought 2 years ago. I use both for many photo subjects, including planes. The point is though, the point-and-shoot cam works fine in many circumstances, I had a picture accepted taken with the Sony only a few weeks ago.

The other upgrade (entirely inspired by airline photography) was a second-hand Nikkor 75-300mm lens. Nothing fancy but a very decent old-fashioned lens.

old: Nikon Coolpix 8800 -- didn't do too much aviation photography with it

new: Canon 350D with EF-S 18-55mm lens and EF 70-300mm IS USM lens

I've only been able to try out the new camera on birds and planes at cruising altitude, but i'm impressed, especially coming from the Coolpix 8800. a world of difference.

2005 was a good year for equipment purchases. Big grin

Q1 2005 I got the Sigma 50-500EX to replace the Sigma 170-500... the extra at the lower end was worth every penny!

Q2 2005 I got the Sigma 18-50 EX to replace a Canon 28-90. What a great lens!

Q2 2005 also saw me purchase a LowePro Computrekker AW. Superb camera bag and the extra versatility of the laptop pouch... fantastic! Big grin

This little lot will have to keep me going for a few years now as we're expecting our first baby in July.... right in the middle of Fairford and Farnborough! Still, I think the sacrifice will be worth it!  Wink

Cheers!

Hi all!

I replaced my EOS 300D with an excellent EOS 20D. Also got rid of my Canon EF-S 18-55 and traded it for the Canon EF 17-40L f/4 (a superb lens!!). Finally I got myself a decent flash...  Wink

Cheers to all and all the best for 2006!
