Some D200 Samples...WOW!

Tue Dec 27, 2005 7:23 pm

Well got the D200 for Christmas and the weather was nice this morning, so I managed to get some nice test shots. What a stunning camera. Following are images. All I did was straighten horizon, crop and apply unsharp mask. Nothing else!!! Judge for yourself

Andrew

Some interesting topics going at DPR and Freds on this test of the 5D and the D200.
Also it seems quite a few people are reporting hot pixels in brand new D200's which may mean some QC issues with the new body.

Very nice photos.

I am using a Nikon D70. Some of the setting are automatic or can be adjusted by the photographer.

When you use the Nikon D200 do you leave the setting on automatic or do you have your personalize settings ?

those potatobaer test results seem quite strange to me and i don´t care if it´s real or fake, or whatever, the pictures i got out of my d200 all look a lot better...

well, anyway, no need to start a war, 5d and d200 are both great cameras and still the photographer taking the shot and doing the post processing makes the big difference.

PS: hope to get some nice sunny pictures in MAD tomorrow, the wheather at home has been nothing but grey since i got the D200 Sad

Well I expected the 5D to be a little better but apart from that nobody should take these comparisons to seriously.
Most likely the differences are caused by different glass in front of the camera.

Couldn't care less about the comparisons......just know that I am loving what I am getting out of the D200, that's the important thing for me. No hot pixels on this D200....just a "hot photographer" Big grin

Anyway, regarding the other question, yes I do personalise my settings.

I'm thinking I might invest in a Canon 1d mark II n. Recently I have been doing quite a bit of non-aviation shooting and I think its new features would come in handy. Plus I've read a number of articles that say unless you are going 1DS Mk. II it's not worth it to go full frame....

I think people really get so wrapped up in pixle peeping that they miss out on a whole lot of photography.
Take a look through some of the posts on the 5D vs D200 to see that.
They even did a test of the D200 vs the 1Dmk2N with those fluffy bear shots which which supposedly done by Nikon.
I seem to doubt that as the shots where good but in the comparison it looked poor in the comparison with poor resolving power of fine detail etc.
Different camera's for different audiences.
You really do have a great choice of gear at the moment.
The D2X and D200,D100,D70 for Nikon shooters and the 1DsMk2, 1Dmk2(N), 5D, 350D and 20D for the Canon crowd.
Could it get much better??

Andy, which lens did you use for that shot. Do you have the EXIF data availalbe.

Darren summed it up. Whatever brand you use. Overall, we (as the end consumers) can be pretty happy with what's available. Like in real life......nothing beats a good competition!!!!!!!!!

Hi All,

Regarding the "addition" yes I sent a mail to the screeners to ask if they thought it appropriate to add a shot priority for a "common" subject but for a new camera type that a that generated a lot of interest. They decided yes (not because I'm a screener) I believe that this would have been done if someone else had requested. (The squeaky wheel gets the grease) Above all, a.net does look for scoops, and this time it is "camera" related. I am sure that some people will feel otherwise, but where did we ever get 100% agreement!

Regarding the lens: 70-200mm VR F2.8 ED

I'll try to search out the EXIF when Iget home.

Cheers!

I don't know what all the hype is about. Not to bash anyone, but that first shot of the Garuda A330 doesn't really blow my skirt up - I would have guessed it was marginal in quality to even get accepted. It's extremely flat, it's soft... doesn't exactly show off the quality of a brand new $2400 Nikon.

Here's a shot, taken with a $999 Canon DSLR and non-L glass, which was recently accepted at 1600 wide. So what's all the fuss about the Nikon?

Of course the Nikon would have the Cannon for lunch, but to your average point and shoot type you wouldn't notice the difference. You know the type, they think White Balance has something to do with affirmative action.

I wasn't trying to start the Canon versus Nikon war again... I should have been more specific - My point was that for a "First shot with new technology" it really doesn't do it justice.

Your later shots (like that SQ 777) are incredible, I'll give you that!

Yes, the screening team is in discussion with Johan to change the minimum accepted picture from 1024 x 680 to nothing less than 10 Mega Pixels, therefore eliminating all point and shoots, film cameras, and entry-level DSLR's.

Yeehar! Finally got my D200 as well after e-mailing about every camera store in the country, and although most have waitinglists (some even charging € 200 downpayment), I found one for an excellent price (€ 1699). The store at Schiphol Airport wanted to sell me one for € 1999!! And still on back order.

The only thing that utterly bugs me is that there are no spare batteries out there and I cannot use the older ones from my D70. This severely hampers the ability to shoot, since you're grounded when the battery runs out. And no, I'm not interested in the battery grip, just for the couple of weeks that it'll take for the batteries to reach stores.

For the rest, it is a big improvement over the D70, it's an awesome camera. I also got the new 18-200VR lens, it's gonna be on there for 90% of the time I reckon.
