How Much Should I Ask For?

Thu Jan 19, 2006 5:16 pm

I have received an E-mail today from a company wanting a high res copy of a photo I have on this site. It is to be used in a magazine which is published every 6 months with a print run of 55,000+ copies.
They have asked me for a price. To be honest I am stuck and don't know how much to ask for.
It is a well known reputable company.
Thanks for any help
Phil

Phil,

Personally I would pick a price that you think is realistic, bearing in mind the print run and distribution. I've been contacted by a German magazine asking to use one of my pictures and been offered their flat rate of $25. As I'm not in the business of selling my pictures, I accepted this - anything I get is good! But, you may feel that this is too low. Go with your gut feeling as I imagine everyone will have an idea how much they think their pics are worth.

Well done for getting asked anyway Big grin

If the magazine is not in the UK and you are being offered payment by cheque in anything other than Sterling, it may be worth checking with your bank what they would charge to process the cheque you receive. You may find the handling charges come to more than the value of the sale. Typically, the UK bank will make a flat charge (free - £20, depending on the bank), but there may also be a charge by the foreign bank that issued the cheque.
