Can This Be Improved?

Wed Feb 01, 2006 5:12 pm

Hey again all,

I have a shot that was just rejected. Is there any of you out there that has some ideas on how I could maybe improve it. As usual I kinda liked the shot so was hoping it would be accepted.

There was also an angle comment there too. I thought that I got it level so comments on that would be appreciated too.

Thanks all,
Martin

Edit: added the angle bit.

Hi Martin,

Nice capture. The red livery is difficult as I think it tends to produce some grain. The background also has a little grain. How about a tighter crop maybe? I like it, I reckon its worth fixing. And i'm sure others here will have better advice! And the level seems fine to me.......

Hi Martin,

I think it's ever so slightly blurry, I'm not sure how much latitude that's going to give you in terms of editing.

There's also some artefacting just aft of the wing fillet - there's a sudden, pixelated change in colour there.

Not sure about the level - looks okay to me, although it's possible the screener looked at the runway, which appears sloped.

Cheers

James

Thanks guys for your input, I'll have another go and see what happens.

If part of the rejection was level, and it is level, then there's not much hope for it.

Hello Martin.

Firstly, I must say this is a really nice photo - I'm a big admirer of panning shots, not least because they are so difficult to 'nail'.

The key issue for me with the shot is the red colour of the livery - it looks almost oversaturated and thus rather grainy. I think if this could be sorted then it might stand a good chance - any blur may be small enough to not be fatal.

I have got the close up equipment out and would say that the photo does need very slight CCW rotation. But we are only talking one fifth of a degree. That's using the back of the runway as the guide. I wonder if that tiny amount is not key, but it's the look of the horizon at the top of the frame, which gives the eye the impression of needing a bit of CCW rotation.

If you would like any help with an edit just say.

All the best.

Thanks Paul, I've made a few changes fixed that minor level issue and we'll see how it goes. If not well I'll try better next time.

Quoting Psych (Reply 4):

Are they ever. I tried a load at 1/60 and 200mm, and I really struggled to get anything resembling sharp. I only got decent results speeding up to 1/125th. I wonder how much IS would help with that.
