Photo Usage Pricing.

Thu Feb 02, 2006 5:59 pm

Hi everyone,

I have got a very cool request for usage of a photo.
And they are asking what the usage fee will be.

I don't have much experience with this so if anyone could help, please.

A few quotes from the email I received :
---
Our client, Northrop Grumman, is interested in using your image of
---

---
Usage will be for one year March 2006-March 2007. We will be running in trade publications, Aviation Week, Air Force Magazine, Armed Force Journal, and various other trade pubs.
---

---
When we have agreed on the cost, I will email you a purchase order and you can upload the image
---

As you might understand I don't want to scare them away with a to high usage fee.
What would a fare usage fee be? Any advice is welcome!

BTW: What is a purchase order?

Thanks!

Regards,
Steven.

Gefeliciteerd Steven !

Looks like they will use the photo a lot. I am not very familiar with this but I think you could ask between 500-1000 euro (depending of the usage of your photo) Maybe even more. Wait for more replies in this thread and let us know what you are asking and if they are paying ! Succes !

bye the way, can we see you photo ?

A 365-day usage in several publications should be a high fee, no need to feel like you could scare them.

Depends on whether your photo is "unique"... or could easily be replaced by another one. The good thing for you definitely is, that they already asked what you'd charge, so they aren't looking for a freebe.

Good luck getting this one settled. Big requests don't roll in everyday.

cheers,
F.

There is a great photo pricing program available and I don't think I have ever seen it referenced on this forum. FotoQuote is a great tool which will give you a price range based on the usage clients are looking for. www.fotoquote.com
I shoot Nikon and Canon, so I guess you could say I go both ways! : )

Aviation Week has a circulation of 96000+ copies. A full page, full color add running 32 times has a cost of $17,045 dollars before any discounts. They can certainly afford to pay you a nice sum for your photo.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback!!

The photo which is was all about is this one : http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=5627907
(It was not accepted here on A.net  Sad )

Unfortunatly there where some legal issues which made them decide that they
can't use this photo. Damn! Anyhow, I'm still in contact with them and they
have told me what they are looking for, so this weekend I will be a man on a mission @ AMS.

Also we have agreed on a price, like I said they will be using the photo in trade publications, Aviation Week, Air Force Magazine, Armed Force Journal, and various other trade pubs. And also maybe billboards.
I'm not going to put the price here yet, but I can get myself a very very nice L glass lens!  Wink
But that is only if I can get the image/photo they are looking for.

If not they will use a computer graphics designed aircraft which they don't prefer. But if this is the case, the cool thing is, they will pay me a sort of consultancy fee for my time and help. Which I think is very fare.

Just thought I would let you know after the great help I got!!

Thanks again!

Regards,
Steven.

Give them your picture for free. Its just your hobby. You should be happy that they even consider your picture. Why bother with money if you can get copy of that magazine.

I gave this picture (printed 20x30 cm) away to someone.... after I gave the photo he offered me to take me up at Schiphol Tower Big grin, he works for the ATC.

So sometimes it can be good to give something, but in this case I think you should buy yourself a nice piece of L glass !

Is this a bad joke that I don't get?

Thanks Jason! I hope the same.
And yes the pop-ups are very bad on that site.

Martin, yes sometimes it's okay to give photos for free. I have done the same, but like you say, in this case I'm going to get myself some nice L glass if all works out ok.

Anyway, good luck with this. What is the legal issue that they cannot use the photo they originally wanted? Looks like you will be getting a nice return if you can get them what they are wanting.
