SXM And MM Sizes

Wed Feb 08, 2006 7:05 pm

Maybe some one that has been to SXM could put little arrows and the MM used from each shot. I would like to go some time and would hate to miss a shot because I was to close or to far away.

Just a suggestion:

Sorry if it offends the photographer to use his picture in that way.

Thanks for plugging my pic, Paul!

I think it's a great idea - no problem with using it for marking photoshoot locations...

If you're interested, my pic is taken at 105mm - we were pretty close to the runway!

Well just out of shot to the left is the Sonesta Hotel. From the roof you can get this shot at 60mm

I was relying heavily on my autofucus by the time the big birds arrived in the afternoon having spent the day at the Sunset Beach bar with my jaw hanging open!!!

As Jid said, you WILL love it!

Paul! How are you doing?

From the beach bar and beach you will definitely use all your 18mm can handle (24mm minimum might be ok sometimes):

From the hotel rooftop you will need 200-250mm for the smaller aircraft:

and probably 70mm for the larger ones (Sorry, that photo was not accepted by a.net, but I thought it was valid) The 100mm minimum on your 100-400 L IS is probably too much for the heavies from the rooftop. Get a 70-200 f4 L to cover both the heavies and little guys from the rooftop, without changing lenses.

Simpson Bay departing aircraft, your 100-400 will do nicely:

I was there in October 2005 and saw that they are building a new resort behind the Sunset Beach Bar that overlooks Maho from the other side. An angle that we have never seen before because it is simply not available right now. Maybe you can wait until that one opens in a year or two and give us the first uploads from your balcony! It will be a great winter photo spot.

In conclusion how much money do you have?  biggrin

Take with you:
17-40 L
24-105 L
70-200 L
100-400 L

Just kidding, but it would be nice to have! Have fun!

If you've got a 10-22 definately take that!!!

I think my 24-70 ended up being my most used lens, although i did stick a 17-40 on for a KLM 744, and a fair few 10-22 shots. When I was up on the Sonesta roof it was mainly 100-400 action, although 100mm was a little dodgy for fitting in a 757 side on..could have done nicely with one of those new 24-105 f4/L.

I forget now but I think you should be able to get rooms for less than $100's per night.
