Difference Between Optical And Digital Zoom.

Wed Feb 08, 2006 11:17 pm

Hi to all,

I almost buy yesterday a digital camera for my son [he's 12] but the Fuji one he likes has two different zooms [and optical and a digital one (?????)]. Since I don't know the difference between both, I agreed with him for a waiting period until Monday.

I will appreciate your comments about the difference and the importance between them.

Thanks a lot in advance.

[The camera he likes is a Fuji S9500 with an optical zoom of 10 and a digital of 3 (???, not sure)].
I'm in process of subscribing to a photographic magazine. Maybe I will learn something about this beautiful whole new world for me.

Optical Zoom is the magnification capacity of the lens & Digital Zoom is Magnification done at the cost of Quality. That's the difference in my terms.

Some Pros here can differenciate technically.

PS: You want to rather go for more Optical Zoom than Digital.

Digital zoom basically takes a smaller area of the ccd and enlarges with software in the camera into a bigger image. So it's VERY grainy at the highest digital zoom setting.

Optical zoom uses the lens to enlarge the image that is focussed on the ccd in the camera and all the ccd is used. Optical zoom is much better quality.

Digital zoom, as others have said, is not a true zoom, but just a magnification of part of the image. The resuilts are usually rather low in quality.

Basically...

Optical zoom consists of lenses moving on a track to magnify the subject for you. By doing this you lose minimal to no quality.

Digital zoom is the cameras software enlarging the photo, thus losing quality. Think of it as you cropping a photo, and then enlarging it back to the original size but with your new composition.

The equivalent of digital zoom can also be carried out on a PC after the photo is downloaded, since it's a software manipulation. Digital zoom on a camera is really a sales gimmick and not very important. You can usually (and should) disable the feature so that you don't use it by mistake and potentially ruin a shot.

You have to see it like this, all written above is right but a very simple explanation is this: If you have a 4 mega pixel photo and you use 2x digital zoom the camera only uses 2 mega pixels. If you use optical zoom the photo stays 4 mega pixels. My advise is not to use digital zoom because you can crop the photo later on your PC with the same result.

funny to watch them trying to sell cameras on the shopping channel when they know nothing about it.

''it has 20x digital zoom!'' its called digital so it must be good!
