Specific Question About Lenses

Mon Feb 20, 2006 12:46 pm

Hi,

I read in another thread: First Shot With New EF 70-200 F4 L Lens (by Linco22 Feb 19 2006 in Aviation Photography) that "The f4 is nice across the range, its sharp enough wide open. Focus is miles ahead of the 100-300 and the sharpness and contrast straight out of the camera are in a league of their own..." from Linco22.

Does the "mm" indicates the distance I got whith such lens?

In another word, a 75/300 has a better [longer] range than the 200?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, 100mm "longer" range.

However, even though it has better range, this doesn't make it better quality. Having owned the 75-300, I would rather have a 70-200 f4.

I got the same feeling. That's why I am considering to buy 70-200 f4, recently.

I used to have an EF75-300 USM III and it was just okay, certainly nothing special. I gather the IS version is similar if not the same optically.

I also had a 70-200 L f/4 and this is an excellent lens. It's great on it's own but you can combine it with the 1.4x extender to get up to 280mm and still get quality images.

I'd choose the 70-200 anyday, but if you must have a 75-300 I'd rather have a Sigma version than the Canon.
