A New Idea, But Need The Help Of Everybody

Mon Mar 06, 2006 1:17 am

Hello!! I suppose that many people has tried this before.. but I have a good idea on how to do a Spotting Places website.. where everybody can go there and see where to go spotting in an airport. I have thought of making it as a blog so everybody can edit the page and add his own airport. I will try seeing if we can get the help of A.net staff to do this and make it together.

What do you think?

Great idea but with every idea comes possible problems.....People will be using & abusing the self changing facility's, for example spammers, advertisers and basic clowns who want to graphite thee name all over the site but there will be a solution to that somewhere down the line.

Is this what you have in mind?..... http://www.ringwayreports.co.uk/spottingpoints.htm
This is all of the viewpoints at Manchester airport-As you asked for, in a graphic manor!

Please keep me informed of any ideas you may come up with or any helping needs as I would to be a part of you plan!
Take care, Bradley Wray

Hello Bradley...

Yes I wanted to do something where a screening process would try avoiding perople's abuses. And yes, something like what you show is what I was looking for. Let's see if I find the way to have a site programmed that way we want and see what can we do...  Wink

Nothing prevents people from adding additional graphics to SpottersWiki. Some people have added example photos directly rather than linking to existing photos on A.net, MyAviation, or a couple of other sites, which we've made easy. Spotting maps have also been added for some articles, for example the Vienna article:

http://www.spotterswiki.com/index.php?title=VIE

So far we've managed to keep the troublemakers under control. We haven't seen an issue with vandalism yet, where people try to deface articles. The fact that we require people to go through the trouble of registering an account, unlike on Wikipedia, may be helping there. We did have some trouble with spammers, but what they were doing is placing a bunch of links on article discussion pages, and sometimes they were hidden from view even then. What they were trying to do was not get people to click on them, but get Google and other search engines to improve their ranking in search results since more sites linked to them. We installed an extension to the MediaWiki software that prevents posts that appear to be spammy, and so far it's been working.

Google Maps has the ability to allow webmasters to create and include maps on a web site that include customized markers. That would allow something along the lines of what Bradley showed, but so far I haven't seen a way that would make it easy for SpottersWiki contributors to add or update such a map.

Google Earth is a nice way to go. The .kmz files are 1kb apiece so you could store tons of them on hardly any space. You have to have a broadband account to use Google Earth.

If you have Google Earth, here are a couple examples :

http://webpages.charter.net/stevekempf/The%20Spot%20-%20KLAS.kmz
http://webpages.charter.net/stevekempf/the%20spot%20-%20panc.kmz
http://webpages.charter.net/stevekempf/v1%20launch%20site.kmz

If you dont have GE, and you have broadband, I would go get it then try the links above. Its a fun little toy and can come in handy for stuff like this.

Google Earth is a good option, one I haven't thought about in a while, though we do have a couple of articles that have them, GSE being one.

SpottersWiki is configured to accept uploads of .kmz files. SteveKempf, feel free to upload or link to your kmz files from the appropriate airport article pages.

I am sure that we would be able to get some maps like the one I posted on my earlier comment on SUN 5th March. Some hard searching could bring us some more of those.

Just added some spots for DTW on spotterswiki.

Not a bad idea, but it really needs to be filled out some.

I do like the idea, as I do visit airports now and then where I am unsure of where to go etc.

One problems that is niggling at the back of my mind though is how legitimate the sites have to be to be listed. Do they have to be somewhere where the public are allowed to go in their masses, such as an official viewing gallery, or do they include spots where you could get your backside kicked by the Police in ten minutes? And where do you draw the line? I'm sure there will be many grey areas, so it might be worthwhile considering who the list is aimed at - everyone, or just us hardened types who don't mind being approached by the Police. Also it might be worth thinking about how likely it is that you will get trouble, as it wouldn't really be on for someone to visit an airport on the promise of a great location, just to be moved straight away.

Not wanting to sound negative, but some thought is required into this.

Regards,

Tim.

Quoting DC10Tim (Reply 12):

These would go under "Official Spotting Locations".

These would go under "Locations to Avoid".

Everything else would go under "Other Spotting Locations". You might want to take a look at the article on ABQ, as it has examples of all three:

(yeah, I know the link looks like crap, blame the acronym thing)

Has anyone seen, read or purchased the book, BuchAir Airports, edited by Alan Lord and one other gentleman?

This is more or less a spotter's and photographer's guide for airports around the world. Many people submit the information to these two gentleman, they edit the information and publish a book every now and then.

Yes, they show some not-so-well-known spots at different airports, but so what? You just need to use your best judgement if you need to get a shot off very quickly and get in and get out............

The book tells you all the warnings, but you need to use your own common sense with each particular location.

I like this idea very much!

Hmmmmmmm. I wonder if an 'advisory' tag ought to be used for some of the more contentious locations, as opposed to a straight 'avoid'.

I didn't know about this book, but this sounds like something along the lines of what I was thinking.
