Which Lenses Do You Recommend For A Canon 5D

Tue Mar 07, 2006 7:27 am

Hi again,

do you have experieces with Canon's 5D and

- Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6 L IS USM (probably THE plane spotter's lens)
- Canon 28-300 3.5-5.6 L IS USM
- Sigma 100-300 4.0 EX HSM DG (unfortunately no image stabilizer)
- others

Lenses up to 200mm (like 70-200) could be a bit short because the 5D has no focal length multiplier. Thats why I would prefer a zoom up to 300 or 400mm.

For close-up range I consider a EF 24-70 2.8 L USM - would this be a good choice?

I would go with the trusty Canon 70-200 L is usm f2.8 and add the 1.4 x II extender.

Why not then add the Canon 400 L (f5.6 i think off the top of my head) if you need to go long range.

Im good at spending other peoples money arn't i  Smile

I am using the 100-400L IS most of the time with my 5D and have a sigma 70-200 EX DG.None of my pics in the DB are with the 5D yet.I got some pics in the que right now all using the 100-400L with the 5D.The weather was real overcast and I have not been able to use it in good light yet.All shots are ISO 400 and 800 with no neatimage at all.The 5D is impressive.

Don't take this the wrong way....but....I always find it amusing that someone that is going to part with almost $4000 dollars for a camera has to ask what lens to buy.

Anyone else see the irony?

Yes, it has not escaped me either.
Been here before haven't we Jeff ?
Jay, I have heard over and over that the 5D is not a good camera for our type of action photography.
In future I will ignore anyone who says that....yours look great.
And 400 and 800 ISO. What on earth is it like at 100 ?

Thanks Mick, people keep forgetting that the 10D had only 3 frames per second and that still did well on a.net didn't it.As for not having the 1.6 or 1.3 crop.I've managed to use most of the sensor so far without any difficulty.Simpley use a lense with the range needed. If you still can't get full frame shots at 400mm then I would say your too far in any circumstance.4oomm is plenty and more with my 5D.

Why not go for a Sigma 300-800mm F5,6 EX DG APO?

I shoot JPEG large and the 100% view does have some noise at 800,but still lower than a 20D.Since it is such a large file the noise disappears when re-sized so no need to use any neat image.I have done test shots at ISO 1600 and again noise was barely noticeable when re-sized.The benefit of having 12.8 mega pixels.

After all this mull over I came to a decision and ordered a Canon 5D with a 70-200 2.8 L USM. No IS because I think I don't need it, I didn't need it on my Sigma SD10 which has a crop factor of 1.7 so my 70-200 was a 119-340 there. It's also said to be more brilliant than the IS-sister and is also moderately priced!

I'm really anxious to see the first results!

Thanks to all of you for your help!

Nice shots Jay! Seeing these make me get very excited about purchasing a 5d eventually. One thing i am curious of, how do you find sharpening the files from the camera? A lot of reports have said that the 5D files appear sharper than previous canon dslr's. Has your sharpening method changed at all?

Chris

EDIT: Btw Jay, Fred Miranda has just released the CSPro plugin for the 5D! Just thought i'd mention it if you didnt know.

My method hasn't changed for sharpening,I just use less.At %100 view I really don't think the photo's appear sharper, but again since the files are so much larger than say a 20D,once you re-sized you need less sharpening added. Some people sharpen before re-size,but I don't so don't know how this would affect them. The parameters are a lttle different than my 20D because in camera sharpening can only be set to plus 1 or minus 1,no in between.Since I shoot in jpeg format for A.NET I rely on the in camera software which is pretty damn good.I plan on doing some RAW stuff so I'll let you know how that works out.I am currently in Orlando right now and plan on getting to use this thing in sun light,I am also heading MIA on saturday to the holes,so I'll get a better measure on the resolution using lower ISO's.

I don't want to miss to present you the first result of my new gear. The first pic is in! It's taken with my new Canon 5D and the 70-200 2.8 L USM. Taken under poor weather conditions with ISO200, F8, 1/800s at 200mm. I want to say thank you again for your advices and hope you enjoy this rare shot:

I reckon I could get just as good a pic with gear that cost a quarter of what you paid.  Wink

Bjoern,

Very nice, although I have to say your Sigma SD10 shots are absolutely superb - very sharp indeed.

Cheers

Thank you for the compliments. But you can only see the pictures that have been added to the a.net db, you can not see those many others that are out of focus, bad white balanced, bad colored...
You CAN make very good shots with a SD10 but more often you produce waste. IMHO the SD10 is not a good cam for aviation photography.

It all depends on processing, and what you put in front of your cam... get a 70/80-200, and you won't regret it.
