I would suggest the Sigma 10-20mm which is quite cheap compared to other lenses and brings you good picture quality...

Pro for the 15mm: f2.8
Con: less flexibility

Pro for the 17-40: more flexibility
Con: f4

If budget doesn't matter consider a 16-35 2.8L

the 17-40L is a great lense for photography on airplanes, price is not too high and you get some great shots.

if you're more into jumpseat night photography grab yourself the 16-35 f2.8  Smile

They are both great lenses, i own both of them. If i could only have one then i would have the 17-40 tho. It is much more versatile.

Here are some shots from both lenses.

I have the 17-40 f/4L and love it. I only have one cabin shot with it and a couple wingviews. Its a great lens though. I got to use the Sigma 15mm Fisheye last week, while a cool lense. You are restricted. I'll join the plugorama. Here are 2 shots taken with my 17-40.

I have both Canon 17-40L/Sigma 15mm. I love both lenses but find myself using my 15mm for all my cockpit shots and some cabin shots. Theses photos are all taken with the Sigma fisheye.

Well, I like all those lenses you have noted down, but I would add another one that is apparently giving very good results to one of our best Spotters (at least for me): Javier Guerrero. I'm talking about the Canon EFS 10-22. Javi, any comment about it?

Some examples:
