How Many Hours Do You Edit Per Week

Wed Mar 15, 2006 7:35 am

It does amaze me when i see someone has download 50 photo's . And i often think how many hours it must have taken to get these photo's edited. Looking at myself i never seem to have the time to do such large download amounts. The max i ever seem to get through is 5-10 photo's in a good night. More often it will be about 5 if i have problems....

Anyway i must spend now im back uploading on A.Net (have been away 3-4 months doing sport) about 2 or 3 nights per week with appx 2 hours on the good old PS and upload page..... Giving a total of 6 hrs per week.

So whats YOUR average time in hours per week on A.Net edits & uploads.... Im sure there are a few of you out there who really must rack up the Photoshop/upload hours....

Most of my corrections are done with actions. I usually run 1 or 2 per picture which allows adjustments to levels, sharpening, sometimes "digital velvia" (color and saturation), and of course re-sizing. Total time per picture is about 3-5 minutes, plus however long it takes during the upload.

I don't often upload more then a few at a time, and seldom bring home more then 40-50 shots of which I narrow down to 5-10, if that.

Lately I try to upload about 10-12 shots per week. I spend about 3-4 minutes per photo, most of that is used for cropping and getting the level corrected. After that it's a touch of saturation, brightness, contrast, and a couple passes of USM and that's it. All in all about 45 minutes to one hour processing and uploading for the week.

I'm much the same.

Open the pic make the changes as per my own little work flow I have. If it takes me more than 5 mins a pic, its just not worth it and won't become anet material.

Including upload time and editing, I'd say its about 20 mins a week at the very most. That too depends on what I shoot at the weekends as work takes over through the week.

Flippin eck you lot are quick !!!

Mind you i am an old woman going through all the photo's on the day and making sure i have a photo of each plane at the airfield. Then picking the best photo etc etc.... So thinking about it a lot of the time i spend is rather picking out the photo's rather than editing them. Workflow per picture for me i would say would be more like 10 mins per picture. But i am a fussy git.

I hold my hand up to being a shooting maniac. I wish i was like you Jeff and could control myself better. I can get through 500 photo's in a day. My record was 900 at the PFA Ralley. But there were hundreds of aircraft there so i have an excuse  Smile I really don't know why i take so many as i always have a very good hit rate for aviation and just end up with loads of doubles. Mind you it always means i get a good photo of pretty much everything there !!!

You've been away a great deal longer than that Simon; either that or your backlog is absolutely massive!

I like editing, so I tend to spend some time on a 'batch', but seldom more than 90 minutes a week I'd guess.
It takes a big man to admit they are wrong, and I am not a big man.

You have to force yourself to slow down. I used to do the same ....two or three on approach, two or three as it passed, two or three after passing....on every plane that came by.

For airliners... probably not more than 2 hrs a week. Sometimes less, as I'm not feeding the queue with photos regularly.

Non-av. photography included I'd say about 5 hrs... I just like to tweak around a bit.

cheers,
F.

when i'm in the mood, sometimes 0 hours per week...sometimes 3 or 4, gets boring after a while sitting here looking at copius amounts of plane photos.

On average, I spend about 3-4 minutes editing a photo, not counting the time it takes to upload.

At present, with other commitments and bad weather, I am editing about 5 photos per week.

So about 20 minutes max total editing time per week.

At the moment, what with it being a lull around these parts of town... I'm probably sitting here for 30 minutes or so, per week. I reckon 5 minutes per image is a good estimate for editing, although I'm forcefully slow sometimes trying to optimise the tweaking process!  Smile (There's just so many nice touches in CS2, I try to use many of them when I really shouldn't)! Hopefully when the wx picks up and I'm on my travels again, I'll up the editing time accordingly. I, too, must admit to getting carried away sometimes with shooting more than necessary when it comes to aircraft! It's all fun at the end of the day. hyper

I guess I am one of those !
I have a backlog of at least 1000 taken over many years. I have not worked for a couple of years due to ill health and spend a lot of time scanning and editing. I try to upload a constant mix of old and new. A lot of my oldest stuff, late 60s and early seventies has yet to be see as I cannot get at the negs at the moment
If you said to me, give me 50 now. it would probably take me and hour and a half as I have a folder on the desktop with images that are ready to go and all the info, cns, histories etc is in another folder. The date and location three letter are part of my file names which makes it dead easy if there is nothing to add
The uploading is the easy bit. Some of my negs are dreadful and, if the aircraft is worth it, it can take an age to work them up to even an acceptable standard

Morning,

I'll add my bit. I used to take forever with photos on PS. Now as i've learnt more and more not only in photoshop but out with the camera i'm happy to say i'm down around the 4-5 minute mark per photo. And i agree with others here, anymore than 5 minutes and you know its not worth it for here.

Last couple of weeks maybe 20 minutes of editing every week compared to about 10 hours of screening Wink

After going out to the airport I often have no more than 3 photos which I consider for uploading. So editing those will take about half an hour...
Yesterday I scanned/reuploaded some old low quality scans I had uploaded in 1998, so that took me another hour and a half. (Replaced with better scans, but with room for improvement still).
But normally I go to the airport maybe once a week (in the weekend mostly) so make that 30 mins of editing per week...

Lately at least 2 hours a night, every night and even more in the weekend because I am working on a book for which I have to supply a fair amount of photos.
Also quite a lot of publications the last few months which require a bit more attention too then the usual stuff.
Received a request for another book last week but that does not seem to be very much work.
Besides the "work" part I spend a lot of time on PS anyway even with photos I edited long time ago just to see if by now I can do some better.

Well it depends what you define as editing... Big grin

Yesterday i spent 7 hours in the darkroom at uni printing up some shot from a shoot i did on Sunday. I walked away with two prints i was happy with so i think that was worth the time.

With my uni and personnal work i spend probably about 20-30 hours a week editing/printing/researching photos. That is done both digitally on my pc and the editing suites at uni and in both the color and black and white darkroom.

For anet i will upload 2 shots a day if i can. I usually spend 30mins to an hour editing the shots and uploading them. However some nights i will just spend longer. Like last night i spent 2hrs sorting thru my 2000 images from my trip to Sydney/Melbourne and Bangkok last last April.

I spend 10 - 15 hours a week. It helps pass time on layovers and keeps me freed up at home for doing my wife's projects.
