Will Either Of These 767's Make It?

Sun Mar 19, 2006 8:26 am

My bad... I had my telezoom on the camera body today when this 767 came in... The largest plane to visit St Kitts, and I should have used my standard zoom. I need the telezoom for any other plane that comes in...

Given the circumstances, I worked on two shots that didn't have the nose or the tail cut off, the first one is probably too backlit or dark to be acceptable

and the second one

might be just short of the required quality? And what about the framing, would this be OK in terms of centering?

Any thoughts? And yes, I would take out the picture(s) that would not be acceptable before they get screened...

Thanks for your feedback!

First one has some backlight in it which gives it an overall dark appearance.
The second one looks quite good, although slightly affected by heat haze - I think this one will be accepted.

I must disagree with the above post. I think the first one has enough light to squeeze in. The second, I think, gets the heave-ho for bad angle.

Hello Ward - how are you?

Very nice shots. Unfortunately I do agree that the first would be rejected for 'dark', because of the lighting conditions. But it is a very good photo, nonetheless.

As for the second - I agree that there is some heat haze having a small impact on the shot. To avoid a quality rejection I think it needs to be a little sharper without exacerbating that heat haze - for example, the titling on the fuselage is slightly soft.

Good luck, and feel free to get in touch if you think I may be able to help out.

All the best.

Thanks everyone! That means I have (including myself) a 1 for - 3 against vote for the first one, and a 3-2 vote for the second one.

It would be great to get some screeners' opinions...

In any case, thanks all for the nice feedback. The pics are taken with my new Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 lens, and I must say I am very happy with the results in general. Regardless of issues as described above, it's an amazing step up from my old 75-300 f/4.5-5.6 lens, not only for aviation but for all my tele pictures.

Okay, I deleted the first (slightly dark) version meanwhile. The second shot had more to it anyway, and further to what Paul said, I've worked a bit on the sharpness, and also given the plane some more "breathing space" in the frame (it was a rather tight crop first).

Second version:

Would you think this will cut it now?

EDIT - corrected the link, I had posted the wrong version...

Hello again Ward.

I do like this shot - the compressed perspective really works in my opinion.

I am still a little nervous about the effect of the heat haze - I think it is still having a small impact on the quality of the image. So the likelihood of a quality rejection remains, for me, unfortunately.

But good luck with the image all the same.

Thanks Paul. Same feeling here to be honest, but I guess it's not too bad to give it a try. A screeners care to comment?
