Will This Photo Make It?

Sun Apr 02, 2006 4:43 am

Hi, this is my first photo I've uploaded to A.net, and I was wondering if it will make it past the screening process. The plane in the picture only has two pics in the DB so far, so I'm hoping that it might be able to get in.

Thanks in advance!

That would mean no.  Smile The plane is just too far, it is grainy and the image is way too big. Try 1024 x ... for you uploads.

Not enough plane in the picture but a lovely shot due to the setting or rising sun.
Keep at it you will get there I'm sure of it.

Ok, well thanks all for the advice...and the humor.
I guess I'll be getting an email in a week saying "nice try, feel free to upload others." Which speaking of others, if I changed the pixels of this one would it be good? And if I should tweak it some tell me please.

I'd tend to agree with both of you.
-9VSPO, the picture I would upload is way better quality and doesn't have all the jaggies. I just figured since on my other picture you guys threw it out before even looking at the quality and just commented on how small the plane was that I would see if this one would make the cut before posting the higher quality image.
-Matt, Thanks he is being really harsh, but that's the way the world works... Anyway, I like your name
It would be nice if I could get some real feedback and not sarcasm, maybe something that might help me improve.

Matthew,

I like the sunset pic. However the aircraft is too far in the distance. Next time try and get the aircraft a lot closer in the shot. I'm afraid it's not anet quality and if you have it in the queue I would remove it. It will not get accepted by the screeners unfortunately.

The problem with the Southwest 737 is that it is very grainy and the detail on the aircraft is not clear enough. Also the buildings kill the shot. I cropped it to remove the buildings but it's still too grainy for anet.

Both problems are due to either taking photo's of aircraft which are just too far away or the camera you are using is not good enough to handle the long zoom. For better quality photo's try getting as close as possible to the aircraft. Try taking photo's of static aircraft, maybe an airshow where you can get up a lot closer. This will give you some good experience. You are still young and to reach a high standard can take not just weeks or months, but years of experience so don't be disheartened. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Ian.

I forgot to say, if you are near any museums you could visit try those, it's always a good way to start taking aircraft pics too. The first museum I ever went to was great and I will always remember it. It's an excellent way to get up close to aircraft.  Smile

Hi,

I find that a good tip to help you see if your Photos are up to standard is to search for the Registration or similar Photos in an Airliners.net search, and compare your edited Photo with what is already in the database. For instance, that Southwest shot above, a quick look in the database would reveal that it isn't up to database standards. Of course, we are all here to help you reach those standards.

Please don't think I am being harsh, as I remember my first thread, when I asked the questions like "Should I Upload" or "Will these make it". I look back now and think that it's obvious that I the Photos needed improvement.

We all started somewhere, and I look forward to seeing how things progress for you. That first (sunset/sunrise) shot is a good start, although a little too far away.

That is good advice. Or an Airfield for that matter. There may be opportunities to get closer to the Aircraft.

Cheers, and good luck,
Cosmic

That's how I got started...got 9 photos up from a few different museums. Filled me with loads of self confidence. Then I started taking pics of actual airliners in operation at SLC...there goes the self esteem

I'm still working on it - slowly but surely

ATCme, you seem pretty new. Welcome! I am also very interested into going into ATC...can't wait to finish this blasted high school. I also notice your pics are from San Diego (right?) I spent 2 weeks there last summer (devoid of decent camera though  Sad ), I loved it! I'm just itching to go back...Lindy might not last too much longer  boggled

Back to topic, what type of camera do you have?

I second that, too. Especially open-air museums. Photography there isn't always easy but at least the problems of distance and movement are taken out.

In friendly small airfields it may also be easier to get close than at a big airport.

If you got closer on the first one and had the plane cenetered, I would give it the go-ahead. In a pic like that, the actual plane does not matter because it's one of those artsy-fartsy pix!!!

Cheers,

ATCme, I forgot, I should have mentioned. My first uploaded pics were from the USS Midway Museum, (if you live in SAN as I suspect) a few miles from the airport. Surely you've heard of it?

All taken with a crappy little 3.2MP w/o zoom.

Admission was steep, $8 or something like that, but it was well-spent  Smile

Hey, thanks guys! Just to clarify, I was in SAN for my spring break, I actually live a few miles north of KFNL. FlightShadow, I'm actually using my dad's camera, I'll get back to you on what type it is. It has 12X zoom (8X opical I think) and is a subsidary of Nikkon (I think) and it starts with an L. Anyway, while i was visiting SAN I did make it to the Midway, but my dad took all the pictures, so not viable to be on A.net. I am somewhat new, I joined just after Christmas, thanks for noticing. I might try some museum pictures sometime, and this summer I'm going to Airventure at Oshkosh, so I'll try again there.
If I ever go back to Lindberg Field, is there a good place to spot anywhere near there?
Thanks for all your help!

NEVER use Digital zoom, unless ya want a crappy picture. Also make sure it's at the hightest megapixel setting - on most cameras, when it's on highest, it won't let you use Digital zoom. At least that's how it is on my fuji...

Airventure at Oshkosh

LUCKY! I'm trying to make it out there at least this summer or next, I watch the ESPN videos of Oshkosh that my dad taped in the early/mid '90s all the time  biggrin

Quoting ATCme (Reply 20):

Heh...Possibly the best airport to spot at, as it's in the middle of the city and thus a lone photographer is not a big deal, whereas at SLC, for example, it's out in the boonies, and a photographer attracts cop attention relatively quickly  Wink

Good places to spot/photograph - The sidewalk around the perimeter (street names elude me) is amazing -- but stay out of those parking lots, Downtown all along the approach path is also cool, as well as Balboa park (specifically in the vicinity of the Aerospace museum - which, on a side note, is not great for museum photography). I suspect there's also some good stuff to be had near the departure end, but I never went out there. Also, if you've got a really beefy camera, the bucket-ride-thing that goes above the San Diego zoo is cool  Wink
