Isin't that 70-200 ?
I've read a few good opinions on this lens. An alternative to the more expensive Nikon lens.

Nope it's the 70-300mm, becuase I have one, but for my Canon 350D.

If you are looking to save a bit of money, do go for the Sigma, that's what I did.

Wow. You have a one of a kind lens! As Sigma doesn't manufacture a 70-300 F2.8 lens, they must have made one just for you! Lucky guy....

If 200mm is sufficient, just go for the Nikon 80-200 f/2.8. Others may be cheaper but this Nikon is arguably one of the best lenses ever produced...

If you need 300, I have an old Nikkor 75-300 (f/4-5.6), quite heavy because of its metal housing, tripod collar etc, but as I am told, optically superior to many modern-day 70-300 zooms. You might be able to find the one I have in second-hand stores (or drop me a line, I might sell  Wink)

Get the Nikkor 80-200 2.8, it is much better. If you want more zoom throw a Kenko TC on it.

You might give the Sigma 70-200/2.8 or 100-300/4 a try.
Both excellent glass and probably cheaper then the Nikkor.

The airport here in Malta the 300mm zoom is the proper one ok if I had to choose the 200mm then u can still fix the X2 converter but then you start loosing some of the quality !!What do you think?

you wouldn't lose quality as such, you would just make your lens slower: if its maximum aperture was 2.8, your TC X2 will give you 2X the distance, but will also lower the maximum aperture to 5.6. Which is still not bad, but you wouldn't want anything less now unless when you have really good light.

If it is really 300mm you need I would probably go for an 70-200/2.8(of whatever brand) combined with a 1.4tc giving you 280/4.
Excellent quality and still fast enough for any situation, also more versatile then just a 100-300.

I have a (secondhand) Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 as my primary lens. It is great, but bulky and heavy.

For traveling purposes I bought a Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO. I was advised (by a salesman who didn't have it in store himself) to go for the APO (coated lens elements) version. I'm not saying it's the best solution, but I just wanted to say I'm quite pleased with it. I think it performs fairly well even at 300mm:

I know little about TCs. Do you recommend a Kenko TC over a Nikkor one? Which type do you recommend, a 1.4? Do you reckon this is a fairly good solution for good weather long focal lenght shooting with my 80-200?

Thanks,

Peter

I feel Kenko to be the best though a Nikkor will probably suffice. 1.4x is better the 2x. If you are shooting in good sunlight I would think that would be fine. I used that combo for a little while before I bought my 80-400VR and got good results.

It will cost a ton. There is no such Nikon lens.
Only the 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor and the 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Zoom-Nikkor.

Correct, those are the current models. Like I said, there's also a good but old 75-300 f/4-5.6D - I'm selling, anyone interested?

Thanks for the anecdote Jeff!  psst

Both the 70-300 lenses are good but the 80-200 2.8 is much better, focuses lightning fast and sharp too. It costs $800US, very fair I think for the quality lens you are getting.

I'm using Nikkor 70-300D f4-5.6 ED AF and I'm actually quite happy with it. There are rumors that Nikon will announce 70-300 VR some time this year, pictures of it were circulating on the web. I'm not sure what apertures it will have. However, I think it will be a consumer grade lense with relatively small aperture, definitely less than f2.8, more like f4-5.6. Nikon already has a great pro-quality 70-200 f2.8 VR (goes for around $1600) lense, there is no sense for them to make it obsolete so soon.

Any one suggesting that a Kenko, Tenko, or Crapko Tele Converter is better than a Nikon should A) Put down the crack pipe, and B) read this:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=17688152

The fact that the guy who actually did the hands on test says that "The Nikon 2x seemed to be just as good optically as the Kenko 1.4," should tell you all you need to know.

Also, as a general rule of thumb, it would make sense to pair the same lens/TC combo. SO, if you have a Stinko 70-300 f/2.8 (haha!) then a a Tenko might be just what the doctor ordered.

Tele Converters are no joke...they are difficult to use and good, sharp, quality results are hard to come by. Of course that is just my opinion. If given the choice between a Nikon 80-400 VR (currently used to keep the door to my daughters tree house propped open) and a Nikon 70-200 VR with a Nikon TC 20-E I would go for the 70-200 combo, as described.

Slapping a Dinko TC on a 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens would be like putting 14" Lupo rims on a 911.
