CF Memory Cards?

Tue Apr 04, 2006 3:57 pm

I am shocked at the ammount of pictures you can fit on to a 512MB CF card, which is used by a 350D.

I think that on the large, with the curved line setting, it holds 78 photos  Wow!

I thought they would have held more.

I am planning on buying a 1GB CF card, so how many would they hold, when on the right setting.

A 1GB CF will hold about double that of the 512MB, simple as that.

Better, if you can afford it to buy a 2GB CF, but try a Sandisk Extreme III as they write and download a lot quicker than the standard.

If you wish, message me and I can suggest a couple of places where you can look to pick one up at reasonable cost.

Once you've sussed out the large, fine setting on your camera (see your other thread) I think you'll find you can probably get double the number of shots on a card.

Try http://www.picstop.co.uk/Compact-Flash-(CF)/Order_1/Page_2 if you're buying a new one. I just bought a 2GB Kingston 50x write CF card for my dad. They're quite a bit cheaper than what you'd pay on the highstreet.

You must have your camera setting on RAW.
A 512 will hold 140 to 150 shots on the highest settings on a 350D so check your camera settings
Don't shoot Raw unless you know how to use it well.

Mine will hold 224 on a 1GB card, and about 124 on a 512MB card, but mine's not a Canon.

I bought a pair of 2GB Lexar professional 80X cards, they are costly but make life much easier. I get a bunch of pics when in Raw mode, the counter on the camera says 188 but I get a bit more I think.

I have a 1GB version, very fast. I use this as my main card. I will definately buy more of these. I would think they would give Extreme III's a run for there money.

Well folks.

Thanks for the info.

This evening I purchased a 1GB card from 7DayShop.com.

Hopefully it will arrive ready for my AMS trip. Big grin

I recently bought one of these too and it is awesome. It will hold 366 raw and 561 fine jpg on my D70. I haven't actually filled it yet to confirm these figures but I am happy with it.

Cheers,
Colin

Have the SanDisk Ultra II with 2GB and got it for around 98 Euro for my 350D and it holds about 800 pics. At first it only shows something around 530 pics but it gets more the more you shoot - depending on the pics taken. Don't buy a card which is more pricey and better than your camera can handle it...keep in mind that you don't need to save more pics in a second than your 350D can produce.

Even if your camera can't keep up with the speed of a faster card, it's still a good idea to get the fastest card you can afford since it'll help on the Card > PC transfer end. That is of course if you don't mind dishing out a few extra $ to save some time.

OK, I've just been messingf around with the camera settings a bit and can still only get 132 photos out of the 512MB card  cry

I thought I would have been able to get more out of the card.  Sad  cry

You will get more, the camera can compress the files, so you fit more on.

I didn't notice any speed increase in downloading until I bought a USB 2.0 CF card reader. Talk about zippy!

That sounds just about right for a 8MP camera:

don't you love compressed NEF (lossless of course)? Saves a lot of cardswapping, I get something like 250 shots on a 2GB card instead of 125  Smile

Using Kingston cards now, bit cheaper and a bit faster both than Sandisk or Lexar, and not made in the PRC (which is a big factor for me personally).

I have not touched the ISO, it is the same as when I got the camera.

Tom,

With all respect, I really think you should invest in a good photography book, one that starts with the basics. Yes, you can learn off your own back, but by learning from a 'pro' you'll gain a much more extensive knowledge in photography.

You really need to know your settings before you do anything with your camera!
