First Attempt At RAW. Help Please

Mon Apr 10, 2006 7:23 am

I have just spent a long weekend at AMS. I was persuaded to try RAW which I did. I have just returned home, put my CF card into the card reader.... and nothing!! All I get is DCIM and can't see any images. What am I doing wrong?

Do you use the Windows Image downloader to download the images? If so, you cannot downlaod the RAW files. Use "My Computer" directly (If using a Card reader) or use Canons (If Canon Camera) Image Downloader to download the images.

When I used JPEG, I would put the card into the reader and that would give me the options of how to download the images. Now all I see is a folder titled DCIM and no images at all. I have tried "My Computer", but no success.

Phil,
There is a RAW viewer plugin for Windows Explorer avail from Microsoft Windows PowerToys site,
The Canon software will also recognise and download the RAW files, unless you are using PS CS or CS2 you will need to convert the RAW files in anycase so you will need to use the Canon software or a thirdparty product like Raw Shooter Essentials or Breezebrowser.

Regards

Chris

Hopefully nothing !
What I do is open a folder on the desktop (say AMS date) and then drag and drop the DCIM files into that. You then have the files on your computer.
To open them you will need a RAW software file and the best I reckon is RAWshooter Essentials 2006 which is a freeware download from www.pixmantec.com.
Teething troubles....you are unlikely to go back to JPG

As others have said, you need a RAW converter.

Don't worry, your shots are still there.

With hindsight, and for anyone else who is yet to make the switch to RAW, I'd go with RAW+jpeg if you have the space on your cards (shame on you if you haven't  Silly ). That way at least you'll have some images to enjoy straight away after your trip!

But can you see the files? You should see the files (IMG_xxxx.CR2 for example).

No need for that, get IrfanView (freeware) and you will be able to view your RAW files straight away without wasting memory.
