"Old Skule" Sluff

Wed Apr 12, 2006 6:35 am

I know I don't normally ask for advice or opinions on stuff I upload, but I've yet to really play the black and white game either. So, I'm asking for opinions on this old A-7 ("SLUFF" is an affectionate name for the A-7 meaning Short Little Ugly Fat F*cker).

Shot manual, f10, iso 100, 1/400 at 10mm on the 30d. Fire away.....

Jeff
I like it a lot. An unusual angle and because of the wide angle, pin sharp from the foreground to distance.
Being hyper-critical, I would like the sky a bit brighter towards the top left.
I like the warm tone of the image and that works well, though it might not get past a screener for that reason.
If it was mine I would be very pleased with it.

Hi Jeff,
Nice shot... However I'm in my work system and I dont know if its my monitor; I see some softness right below the nose section as pointed out here.

As far as my knowledge goes, I think it's very well done technically. The exposure is spot on. Which can not have been easy in that light.

The air intake looks a bit unnatural. Probably because it was covered, which is not very clear in the picture? Some jaggies here and there but in my opinion not disturbing.

The "polarizer" effect in the sky is great but it looks as if it was processed with a gradient which is probably not allowed.

Well, just my 2 cents.

I see what your getting at, but that is really just dark blue sky, no polarizer or gradient used. I could darken the right side a bit, but I will probably screw up the left side if I try to lighten it.

Quoting VasanthD (Reply 2):

I see that too now, maybe I missed that when I did the sharpen mask? Will fix it... I just realized I can see myself in the reflection!

Quoting Diezel (Reply 3):

It was because there is no engine in it, they look funny when you can see all the way through.

I like it better then just black and white, but may try a pure B&W rendition as well, would like to hear a screener's take on the coloring..?!?

Great shot as always Jeff. I know I'm relatively new here and no expert but on my monitor I'm seeing some black isolated pixels around where you're reflected in the nose...

I like the shot Jeff. Nice motive, however it looks a little oversharpned on my screen. I'm sure you'll be able to fine tune it and get her uploaded.

Jeff,

After you remove the jaggies on the leading edge of the wing, I don't think there's a prob there! Should get in no probs. Great pic, great aircraft.

This is what got uploaded. I know it's not true B&W, but I tried three different conversion methods, and they all looked to bluish for what I had in mind. Some adustments were made to the sky in using a blue filter during the conversion which makes the left side a little lighter.

Re-did the sharpening as I wanted, and hopefully fixed the softness.
Thanks for the comments.

Certainly should be accepted here. I love the cloud reflections in the radome.

I really should invest in a wide-angle lens (sigh).

They are fun to use no doubt. I used to have one way back in my film days, and until recently didn't really want another. Once you get one, you will want to shoot everything with it.

I agree.

And you will get dirty! Because you will be flat on the ground on your stomach because the wheels from your car suddenly look interesting, on your back under a plane to get that dramatic look, in the sand on the beach, half in the water because the waves and your little daughter look so great from that angle with the 14mm on your Nikon/Canon. So, know what you are doing and I did warn you guys.

According to my acceptance email, this photo has been accepted, but I can't find it anywhere? I looked for it in the rejection area, and it's not there. I've also emailed the screeners.

Anyone run into this issue before?

I have. The photos should be in the temporary queue to get added to the Photo DB. Check your photos in queue in the MyPhotos section. You should get a message stating your pics are in the add-on queue... Should take about 10-30 mins to get it cleared...

Cheers!!
