How Can This Be Bad Distance?

Sat Apr 15, 2006 7:23 am

I have had a ton of pics rejected, I know some have been sloppy, but now the new reason I have had pics rejected is due to bad distance. Here is a pic that I thought was awesome and would have been accepted. Tell me what you think.

Thanks

Brad

The subject is only taking up like 50% of the frame, and looks awkward to the background, as does that big pole. A shame as it isn't a bad pic otherwise.

It is bad distance and maybe centre.

The pic not cropped tightly enough around the main aircraft of the shot, thats why its been rejected. I see what you were trying to do here by having the aircraft off centre and showing some other aircraft of the fleet in the one shot. I like the shot and its looks affective but not anet material. Try a tighter crop around the main aircraft featured, making sure its in the centre of the shot and give it another go if you wish. But watch for jaggies and quality. Use a tad less sharpening and it should be ok.

Clickhappy thanks for the response, but I have to disagree. I personally think this is a great ramp shot. It not only shows the pushback sequence, but a terminal shot as well. The pole is a ramp illumination pole. That's uncontrollable. If I had to choose out of the 475 pics i have in the db, I would put this one up there as one of my favs. Would this pic be accepted if I categorized it as an airport overview?

thanks

Maybe its my screen, but despite the pole and distance, it does seem a bit soft, no?

Yep

Could do with a tighter crop and maybe wait until the pole vaulter lands on the mat before pressing the shutter.

I still like the shot a lot. In fact when did you take it, because I almost took the exact same one on Tuesday April 11th around 3pm.

At a quick glance, I would ask :"What is this photograph about ? What story is it trying to tell ?"

Is the story about the service cart ? If so, shouldn't we be closer?

Is it about some new feature on the type of jet - or the fact that particular airline now has this type of jet, or what ?

If you were/are writing about the scene potrayed, you would definitely narrow the focus of your story to something -perhaps unique,or plausibly unique to that scene.

Translating that last paragraph into visual terms, how would you tell a story about that scene if the photo had to be caption-free ?

How? I thought it would be obvious. But since you asked...... The plane is too far away. Better?

I don't see how everyone's gonna give Brad so much crap about this photo. I think his questioning this rejection is totally alright. We all see ramp shots like this one all the time on a.net. I just looked through the top of last week and there are a couple of photos in there, that portray planes even further in the distance. I'm not saying they should not have gotten accepted and rejected for baddistance instead but I'm saying, they need that distance because the photograph is supposed to show more than just a single plane, just like in Brad's photo here. When I was at MCO this past Tuesday I took the exact same shot he did, and I even thought it might be A.net material as well. I guess all I'm trying to say is that constructive criticism would be more welcome by Brad.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. I do like the criticism, hopefully it will make me take better shots. The only thing I don't really get is the hubbub about the ramp pole. It's just one of the things that unfortunatly, comes with the territory. This shot was taken from the terminal window, so it coming out this well was a shocker for me.

Sebastian I took this shot April 2nd. Thanks for the post.

Your image is soft with an exposure problem too.

Brad you appealed the image and I put in a personal comment to you on how to improve. Why the confusion in this thread then?

Going back and re-reading the email. I caught the comment, Tim. I cropped the photo and re-submitted the photo. Thanks to everyone for the input.
