Sold My First Photo Recently.

Wed Apr 26, 2006 7:40 pm

While on easter holiday in Britain, I was contacted by the Norwegian newspaper Bergens Tidene (BT), a nationwide newspaper, who wanted to use this photo:

It was used in a story about some bolts falling off the aircraft after hanging loose for 6 years or something.. (story not as important as the fact that they used my pic on nearly half the page  Wink ) And they agreed to pay approx £50 for it. Not bad for a first sale.

Link to story on newspaper website: http://www.bt.no/lokalt/bergen/article260711.ece (In Norwegian)

Congrats on the sale of your image Thomas! It's a great feeling to see your image in print!

I had two images printed in the UK newspaper the Metro on Monday from the London Marathon which was good to see.

Good luck with future sales.

Well done Thomas!  champagne

Though, don't go public again if you get Big One.

The Norwegian tax collectors might be a plane-spotters as well!

Thank you all.

I understand they didn't pay as well as I thought they did. When the conversation first started, there were talks of "donating the photo", but as I hesitated to answer the woman on the phone went, "send us a bill for 500NOK". Alright, I thought to myself, and sealed the deal.  Smile

Hey Thomas, don't misunderstand the above postings - GBP 50 for half a page is extremely good for a newspaper!  Smile

It was just mentioned that there are others who are willing to pay more, but that's certainly not the rule.

Ah, I see.  Smile

Still, after seing my photos get used for free (I tend to allow it given my name is credited), it is nice to see someone wiling to pay money for it. Though it was never my intention to get rich of photography.

Good thing I'm not trying to make a living out of it. Lets face it, £50 in 6 years is not much to live on...  Wink

Congratulations, Thom@s!

I am sure that - to most of us - the money was not the most important, but it is the honor and pride that they picked your shot, you will never forget (and that's the fun part of it, which cannot be translated into money)!

Best regards,

Walter

Do you sell your photos for a single and unique use or once sold, the buyer is free to use it as much as he wants ? Can you sell it several times to distinct users ?

This is the way I prefer to do it, and that's how I imagined it would be in this particular case, although I didn't actually discuss that matter with the newspaper. If they wish to use my photo on a later occasion, it will be fine by me provided they credit my name as the photographer.

Still haven't received any money though... taking some time this.
