Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras

Wed May 03, 2006 5:21 am

Sony has chosen “Alpha” as the new brand for their digital Single Lens Reflex cameras and will soon start worldwide introduction. The brand name was chosen to reflect Sony's enthusiasm for entering the digital Single Lens Reflex market. Sony has adapted the "á mount system" name for the "Maxxum / Dynax lens mount system" which Konica Minolta has developed.

Meaning "beginning" and "essential," the symbol alpha embodies the spirit of Sony's approach to the D-SLR market. Under this sub-brand, Sony will produce a complete camera system of accessories and lenses to enhance the enjoyment of photography.

Can't wait to see it! Big grin

In all honesty unless they have a HUGE reserve of cash to throw at it i seriously doubt that many people will adopt the system that isnt as complete as canon or nikon.

Most of the die hard minolta owners i know have switched already to canon and nikon.

I am curious as to what Sony produces though. As some of you may or may not know, Sony already produces many components that are used by Canon and Nikon for their DSLR cameras (Nikon CCD's for example). So to finally produce their own product will be of interest.

As they are already producing a lot of compenents for Nikon and Canon, the R&D is already there. I wonder however if they will reserve their latest technolgy for their own cameras and pass components onto Canon and Nikon as they become a generation older.

This should impact Nikon more; I believe that with Sony manufacturing their core component: the CCD sensor*. Canon at least has control of the production of their CMOS sensors.

* NOTE: Not certain who produces the CMOS sensor for the Nikon D2X. I believe this is the only Nikon camera that uses a CMOS sensor as per the Canon range.

It might be a case then that the CMOS sensor makes its way into the Sony DSLR, or a cut down version makes it into the low end.

Increasing production will be required for Sony, but might benefit Nikon in-directly through reduced cost per unit.

Who knows?

Wonder if Sony will continue their cooperation with Zeiss?

As Sony have recently taken over Konica/Minolta camera division it might well be that the 1st Sony badged DSLR will be a reworked Dynax 7D.

Perhaps it is time for Nikon to buy some sensor producer or invest and develop its own production?

Economies of scale. Maybe Nikon doesn't have the ability to produce sensors on bulk to obtain either high quality, lowest cost or both. It was probably marginal initially for Canon to produce their CMOS sensors back in the D30 days. The DSLR market is so fierce now, that if they hadn't started to produce back then, they would probably be sourcing from Sony as well.

Are there any sensor producers for sale, which Nikon can buy?

If it aint broke, why fix it... obviously Nikon and Sony have a good relationship going... I'm sure Nikon could sell flash/autofocus technology or whatever to Sony, areas where Nikon excel.

They have a good relationship now, but who can guarantee that it will last forever? One day Sony can find that they do not need one more competitor on the DSLR market and ... .

And breach a contract that is probably signed for years ahead? IF they were that stupid, Nikon will have plenty of time to sort out a new supplier.

Well, as a former Minolta shooter I waited for the Dynax 7D before making the jump to digital. And waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. And finally bought Nikon.

Even though I have no need to buy a Sony DSLR, I am sure they will be popular. They are synonomous with quality products. My F717 point and shoot was the dogs danglies at the time. I'm just looking forward to seeing one.  Smile
