Canon Batterie (BP511)

Mon May 08, 2006 3:29 am

Hi everyone,

I just ordered the BG-E1 for my 300D. I was also just looking at getting 2 new batteries for the grip. I nearly fell off my chair when I was looking at the original Canon BP-511's online. Depending on where you buy them at, they run between 40€ and 50€ which seems ridiculous.
Then I was looking at the non-original ones and they are only 4€. So I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with these types of batteries. I would totally appreciate it if someone could comment on them so I can make an informed decision.

Cheers,
Sebastian

Sebastian,

I've purchased what I will call "generic" or non Cannon batteries for my 20D.
I have had crap results with three of the four batteries I've purchased over the past year. Problems include taking a fully charged battery off the charger and then within twenty minutes of use, it's down to 25% strength. I have also experienced this...I'll be shooting away with a battery and then all of a sudden my entire camera dies...just turns off...not cool! Initially I thought it was an internal problem on the 20D, but I can trace these troubles back to the generic batteries every time; never had that problem with a Cannon battery. In the future I'll spend more and buy the Cannon batts, or perhaps try a different generic brand and hope for better results.

Cheers,

I use the ones from 7 day shop http://www.7dayshop.com and these are very cheap. I have actually found them to be longer lasting than the Canon original ones. They were about £10 for 2 (about 16 Eu)
They currently have 1gb cards for about £15 too if you think of ordering from there (you might want to have a look).

7dayshop only deliver to the Bailiwick of Guernsey, Jersey, the UK & it's islands and Eire according to their postage FAQ's.

Hi Sebastian,

I also use the battery grip on my 300D. I ordered a "generic" extra battery from my local photography shop and this would simply not work (it discharged very rapidly, even after several hours in the charger). I took it back to the shop and asked for a replacement, which I got after a few days without any problems. This type is "VARTA P33 - 1500mAh - 7.2V Li-Ion" and performs better than my original Canon BP-511 (which is normal because this only has a capacity of 1100 mAh).

PS: I do have another problem with the batteries in the battery grip (I wonder if someone else has had similar problems?). The original Canon battery fits easy in both the slots of the battery grip, the VARTA battery also fits into both slots, BUT is will only extract easily from the left slot (if I insert it the right slot, then it is very difficult to get it out...). Physical dimensions - with the naked eye - seem identical though...

Best regards,

Walter

Sebastian.

Well Mick has the good news and Kevin the bad.

I'm using four of 7day shop's generic batteries wih my 20D and have no trouble after several recharges.

The batteries are marked DB02 LCNV05SO for what it's worth.

Strangely I too bought my first 1 GB card from the same source but chose the slightly dearer Scandisk Ultra II based on my experience with smaller cards of the same make and type.

I have bought some from gsm-welt.de and they are superb. They just do what they should do, give my cam some life. I've heard of several other people that bought them as well and they didn't have any problems either

Thanks so far guys. I guess I'll order one or two of the generic ones and then see how they serve me. I'll let you know for sure though. As far as the CF card is concerned, I already got a 1GB Sandisk Ultra II a while back, but I'm still waiting for my 70-200L f4 which I'll get for my birthday this friday.  Smile

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

Just to add to what others have said, I bought a generic Canon battery a while back for my 300D and it was about a quarter the cost of the real thing and is far better than the "genuine" ones.

Regards,

Tim.

People seem to like the ones from www.sterlingtek.com if you live in the US. Dirt cheap too (about $25 for two).

I've used a Hähnel battery pretty much since I got my 300D over two years ago, and as far as I can tell, it last longer than my original canon-one.

I've also got generic batteries, 1800mAh I think. Bought them at the same time as the camera. Much better than the original.

Alrighty,

well I just bought two generic 1800mAh batteries. I'm hoping they'll work just as fine as yours. Thanks again.

I, like Malcolm have bought from 7dayshop and have had no problems with them. I have also bought them off e-bay and still no problems.

Hope that helps
