Lens Advice: Is Or Not?

Thu May 11, 2006 8:41 am

Hello all,

Sorry to bother you again with my purchasing decisions, but I yet again have a big decision to make, and not a lot of field experience to base it on. I need a big telephoto for aviation photography, but there are two I have my eye on that are about the same price. Here goes:

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 with Image Stabilization

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L

So, which would you recommend? Just so you know, since I last posted I've discovered the 10D along with its very attractive price, so that's what the lens will be mated to. Thanks for your advice!

Better to be nouveau than never to have been riche at all.

For essentially the same maximum focal length (280mm), and same maximum aperture at full zoom (f/5.6), this combo:

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L

+

Canon EF 1.4x II Extender

Is in a totally different league than the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS. The extra few hundred bucks for the combo is well worth the investment, hands down.

(Note: If you didn't already know, the 1.4x causes a loss of one f-stop, which is why I said the combo has a max aperture of 5.6 instead of 4.0.)

There have been a lot of posts lately asking a similar question. Thankfully it's been answered unanimously each time - the 70-200 f4.0L is a superior lens without question and worth any price variance (higher).

70-200L @ 200mm is of course better than the 70-300 IS @ 200mm, but 70-200 doesn't have a 300mm zoom, and with the teleconverter on the 70-200L, the focal length is only 280mm, and the quality decreases. If you want a lens with 70-300's focal length and with an IS, go for the 70-300. If IS and 300mm (200mm-300mm isn't as much as 17mm-24mm) doesn't matter to you, go for the 70-200L.  Smile

I was one of the people posting the exact same question, and like Glenn said I went for the L glass. I would love to tell you how it is, but my birthday is not till tomorrow. I can't wait though.

Cheers,

Not really. Camera shake is more of an issue, but the lens is still superb with the extender on the end.

The quality does decrase, maybe not much, but still yes. This photo was exactly what I expected from a 70-200L 4.0 with 1.4 TC. Not as good as without.  Smile
