Flash Gun Advice

Mon May 15, 2006 3:31 am

Whilst it's not "aviation photography" advice, I am looking for advice on which flash to buy.
I have a 20D and use the EFS17-85 f/4-5.6IS USM for non aviation.
I wish to use the flash primarily to take photos of my daughter's inside horse shows

I use these when I need on location strobes...

Not necessarily top shelf, but they are damn rugged, and have an easily replaceable bulb. I get between 100-200 "pops" depending on the power setting I'm using. The modeling light isn't as bright as I'd like, but not many are.

Not many shoe mounts are going to throw enough light, and if you use the E-ttl function, your lucky if you get the subject lit properly, the rest will look like it's in a cave. Alien Bees makes a nice powerpack unit to use with their lights as well. I would go with at least 2, if not three for indoor shoots. You will want to fire them wirelessly as I doubt you'll want sync cords running all over the place, so either a couple of sets of the inexpensive eBay wireless units, or dump some cash on PocketWizards.
